Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. I have read that bad cables can cause problems like this, so I have ordered a new usb-c cable. Any thoughts on what it might be if that doesn't solve the problem? Anyone else have this problem?
It wouldn't bother me that much, but I primarily use this with my Arch laptop, and Arch does not function well with the QMK firmware for Planck, making it difficult to reflash the board on the road.
What could we do to help getting QMK working better with Arch?
The Arch problem is summed up in this issue: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/issues/3316. It's a consequence of Arch's rolling release schedule. If it affects more than a handful of people, it might be nice to detect the GCC version and issue a helpful warning message to anyone using GCC > 7.3 to compile firmware with audio features. On the other hand, if compatibility with newer GCC versions is coming, it probably isn't worth the effort.
Regardless, I appreciate the tip and the effort to improve QMK usability. Thanks for all the great work!
