Hey everyone,
We confirmed today that the Planck Light PCB's were not flashed properly at the manufacturer and they are arriving without the bootloader. This means your keyboard will arrive functional and usable, but without reprogramability.
Right now we are working with Jack to restore the reprogramability that was designed to be there. At the moment we are looking to fix this by creating a module that will allow you to flash the PCB using the In-System Programming which should be the fastest and simplest method.
That said, we will need some time to create and test that module. We are evaluating timelines with our manufacturer now and will reach out to everyone with any updates and an expected ship date as soon as we have more information.
My apologies for this issue and we are working to get everything taken care of as quickly as possible.

Hi there Mark, did you get sny answers because of the possible import fees? Massdrop should at least tag the package as a gift or something. I already paid custom fees for almost 180$, which cost me almost 50€ with DHL handling. It will be frustrating.
danglingelse
It was 'declared' at a worth of 1$, so the envelope slipped straight through here (germany).

Things that will be fixed in this drop:
* PCB will be flashed with the bootloader * Metal SMD standoffs instead of the spinning plastic ones * The stabilizer plate will be sized correctly

Is it possible to get a set of the metal standoffs and install them on the first version of the board? I'd like very much for mine to have them.
jackhumbert
Any way we can fix the stabilizer on the original drop and get metal stand offs. Kinda feel like shit with how bad The first drop went and how poor it has been handled since. Just want mine to work 100%
Is there a button sequence to change the lighting effects?
Does anyone know what controller is used in the planck light?
Does the Planck Light use the rev6 PCB (https://olkb.com/planck/pcb), or it is a completely different PCB?
Why is the estimated shipping march 2019? Is that excessive or is that just me? (I'm a beginner wanting to build my own Planck keyboard)
This product is too expensive. It's about half the material costs of other keyboards
Where's the heavy switches through, an option for no switches would also be nice, either way is better than paying for extra switches no one will be using

Here's my Planck light. I spray-painted my semi-translucent white blank keycaps in real white.
I ordered semi-translucent white blanks, but Massdrop sent me only 47 1u keycaps and their colors are not to my taste.
So I ordered some other keycaps from Novelkeys to compare with mine, but I don't like them either so I decided to paint my keycaps. I'll show this pic to compare their colors between different types of keycaps.
search
(Sorry Massdrop, I got only 1 "S" keycap so I used a keypad "5" instead, no offense.)
In the top, there are white alphas with legend keycaps, Massdrop say they're PBT, but I think they're just coated with some material on the top of semi-translucent keycaps.
Definitely they're coated on purpose not to make led light pass. The problem is they look a little yellowish with the naked eye. Because they don't cover all keycaps in white so uncovered parts can make a led light line. You can see it in Massdrop promotional pics that's kinda awesome though.
In the middle, you can see a 2u size keycap, that's a semi-translucent keycap Massdrop sent me, it's not white but yellowish white. You can see them in the promotional pics as well. I think most keyboard enthusiaists know keycaps have "glowing" feature are not "pure" white.
Right next to it, you can see a 1u size keycap, that's a white blank keycap Novelkeys sell. They're not white but greenish white, it's weired I don't know why they look greenish, maybe because they're old or they used some wrong paint.
In the bottom, there are keycaps which I spray-painted myself. I got only 47 1u keycaps so I have to sandpaper keycaps from Novelkeys. That's the reason I got 2 flat keys for my space keys.
Here's a pic to compare with my xbox one white controller.

I just wanted to find out how planck light look with real white blanks. I know defitinition of real white is subjective and there are various white colors in the world. But I'm sure semi-translucent white blanks are not white.
I use only blanks for my keyboards which are not just for display on my shelf. So this is one of my test whether planck light is qualified to be my main driver.
Why do I compare mine with my xbox controller? I want to show you I want my LEDs shine like xbox logo light. I mean xbox controller doesn't look yellowish when it's turned off. That's another reason I painted my keycaps.
Here's a pic when it's turned on.
search
(It's not funny at all Xbox controller doesn't need a wire but Planck light does.)
RGB light still passes without a problem. I didn't change RGB code for you to compare with yours, (disabled a single led in the middle of space) It's RGB test matrix color you can see when you turn on yours which got default firmware.
I still have to do something like replacing some switches making abnormal reaction and complete programming my firmware. After finishing remaining stuff, if I got some time, I can write a detailed review. That's why I wrote this here.
I hope this info helpful to community members who got planck light and who think whether to buy it or not.
P.S. I don't recommend you to paint your keycaps. They're gonna peel off eventually.
I am keen on this drop; is there a possibility for "White Alphas with White Modifiers?".
Still waiting for an option without switches/keycaps to be offered. @YanboWu , any chance this drop?
rudy44
@YanboWu if not, saying so would also be nice :)
ObiMassdrop
Yeah. Ready to drop an order in. If only that option exists.
@jackhumbert How does a pre-assembled Planck light got soldered? By human or by machine? Also, if I select a Planck light kit, will it be pre-soldered as well?
I ask you this because I hate my own inconsistent soldering skill, at the same time I would like a Planck light with blank keycaps but it doesn't have an option for pre-assembled one.
Actually, I would like to order the preassemble one then adding an option to include blank keycaps but it the description page says that the options will not apply if I order preassemble one. So, can I really go with this option?
gunpinyo
I'll have to check with @YanboWu, but I think they're done by human - we might not have the quantity to afford machine-soldering them.
Any chance of getting an additional full set of the ABS transparent key caps with my order?
I have both OLKB and PREONIC, and I just can't use OLKB because of the top "missing" row. PREONIC is perfect. Would it have been a PREONIC I would have instant buy it. OLKB is a definitive "no".
OlivierPons
OLKB is my company name - the 4x12 you're referring to the is called the Planck (the Planck Light being what's offered in this drop specifically) :) We're working on a Preonic Light as well!
jackhumbert
Preonic Light!!
Anyone in NA want to swap black alphas for my whites?

Yup
k-f-
I'd been keen too.
What revision is the pcb?
Hey looks like they added instructions for flashing your plank: https://www.massdrop.com/talk/9635/how-to-flash-your-planck-light-keyboard-via-isp
Is it possible to order a set without switches? I prefer a different (low profile) switch type to the ones listed.
Load 1 more comment
Yes. Would it be possible to order without the switches and keycaps?
any chance of a bluetooth version some time in the future. i love my planck and ordered a preonic for the office, but i have long relied on bluetooth and am making an exception just because i love the planck so much!
Hello, guys. I'm currently taking a python class and was wondering will this keyboard work well for that? The computers at school have crappy keyboards and we don't have the same computer everyday some are mac and some are windows. I was thinking of carrying the keyboard around in my backpack. Thank you

I have small hands and I barely have to move them to use the number row. Programming isn't a bunch of symbols in a row, it is a mix of letters and symbols. You would have to be constantly flipping between layers.
SuperBobKing
Every sentence contains one letter written with shift. You do not loose speed because of that. The Planck has been my daily driver for 18 months. In the very beginning I though that I should maybe switch to a Preonic but when I did I just found the number row to far away. I am a programmer and the Planck has definitely increased my typing speed. It is also very comfortable to keep in your lap with feet on the desk ;) It took a month to get used to.
Where can I buy "Semi-translucent White Blanks (ABS)" separately?
potatowalk
If you click "join drop" you will have that option available to buy when checking out.
dorianjlp
The options only apply to self-assembly. The pre-assembled come with only three styles of caps, black and white, and Grid and MIT.
Multiple days after the opening there are still only these options.
i think it would be better if the sides of the case extended high enough to cover the bottom of the keycaps. It would provide some more protection to the switches and the keycaps since it is meant to be portable. I know the keycaps aren't produced by OLKB but it would be nice if Massdrop could make their own keycaps of higher quality
RaymondLu
Unfortunately this means you'd hit your thumb on the case when using the thumb keys on the bottom row :/ not sure much can be done about this - I think a thumb cut-out would be unsightly.
jackhumbert
Ah I hadn't thought about that. And yeah thumb cut outs would be unsightly
@YanboWu I just got the module in the mail...now what? It didn't come with directions.

An email out to those in the drop would be nice when this is ready so we don’t have to find it in this comment list.
We will be sending out an email for everyone that needs instructions - but here is the post as well!

@demollator @mikethetiger @reyonman
i both hate and love this keyboard. like other people have stated, it's up to your personal preferenceo nwhether or not this is a good keyboard for you. I love it because it essentially got me a job, due to the soldering skills it taught me. However, as a keyboard, i have reverted back to my original mech keyboard after about 3 months of using the planck, and it has stayed in the sleeve that came with it. It's small, sure. You can make it your own, sure. But if you use the number row or function keys like i do (especially in combination with shift, ctrl, etc.) and you are serious about getting this keyboard, I would consider researching on how to reprogram the keyboard. With macros this keyboard would work just fine, I just hate having 5 shift keys.... not convenient enough to warrant every day use. still a fun project to build, tho.

Haha well I tried!!

Yeah it's cool. My planck setup would cost you more than a standard one. It will come back if you missed the drop! they always do.
Can you make us choose multiple keycaps?
why does this 1/2 of a keyboard cost more than a whole keyboard?

How is spending money a hobby? They aren't actually doing anything just spending money.
Are the switches hot-swappable?
zbug
No they are not.
Is ship date seriously March 2019???
hayitsnik
I ordered one last year Dec 19 and received it this year Jun 30. That was with a delay too because they had fucked something up the PCBs. And they stilled fucked up the bootloader.
How big is the memory compared to rev4? rev4 has a small memory capacity, so I could not mapping and mode-setting I wanted.
If I have enough memory, I want to buy a planck light.
drunkenJ
It's much larger! More room for layers and activities :)
How would I go about to get white alphas, white modifiers and a bunch of white blanks to cover for the fact that my layout is custom (and Swedish)?
I want to try this board but having caps that say the wrong thing is a dealbreaker. Enough blanks is an OK compromise.
