I'm kinda disappointed also.
The finishing on the G10 scales is great, and the action is good, but that's about it for pluses.
The pocket clip looks homemade, has sharp edges, and retention seems weak. The pivot screws also look pretty cheap. The thumb studs look and feel OK, but they're too close to the scales or too short. But the worst thing is that it has significant side to side blade play out of the box. I hope I can tighten that up without screwing up the action. #0060
Edit: I couldn't get rid of the play. I think the washers may be too small. I checked my Benchmade 940 and it's worse. My 484 has no play. Another plus though - I love the grind. It reminds me of my Spyderco Southard.
Edit: Posted this elsewhere but thought it should be here too. I did eventually get rid of all blade play, but needed to trim the pivot barrel <0.02 inch to do it (both screws were in as tight as they could go as it came). A small hidden washer between the scale and screw would have worked too. Of course, I then had to go through a break in period like most others to get the good action back.
jallen89In regards to the thumb stud being close to the handles. I almost never use the thumb stud on axis lock knives. The axis lock can be pulled down to allow the knife to come free of the detent and then, assuming the pivot is adjusted correctly, flick your wrist and the blade is out. I also find that pushing the thumb stud more upwards than outwards (away from the handle) deploys the blade better, with a little wrist action for faster deployment. Hope that helps.
LightningBRZHows the blade play in the open and locked position? I can’t find the perfect spot for the pivot to be tightened at, where there is no blade play in the open and locked position, and I’m still able to flick it open and closed with my wrist when I pull down on the axis lock.
DougFLA123Zero play, but mine is a tad tight at the moment. I’ll report back after tweaking some more. A drop of blue thread locker goes a long way to maintaining the proper pivot tension.
Besides the questionable thumb stud placement, this knife is a win for me. And in all fairness, most knives I’ve purchased at this price point have needed a little setup from the factory.
LightningBRZI haven’t taken it apart and oiled it yet, so its possible that with some oil on the pivot washers I’ll be able to tighten it just a little bit more and get zero blade play and be able to swing it out with the flick of my wrist. The best part about an axis lock knife is being able to swing it open and closed with the flick of a wrist! : )
DougFLA123Blade open and locked was where I noticed the issue with mine.
However, I took out the pivot and shaved about half a millimeter off the pivot barrel with sharpening stones. I took it just a hair below scale height. That allowed me some adjustment room to tighten it up a little. Blade play is mostly gone now. It won't free drop like this, but it's not bad and should improve with break-in. I think I've gotten to where you're at with respect to the action.
I also bent the clip a touch and it doesn't twang when taking it out of my pocket anymore.
Still not real happy with the thumb studs but, like many others are saying, I tend to wrist flick axis lock knives anyway.
LightningBRZNo flicking action on this knife for a lot of people, myself included. The action is just too stiff. I have not adjusted mine yet, since I need to buy a second torx screwdriver to do it. Others have mentioned blade play when loosening the pivot. I wonder if that is why they tightened them so much in the first place?
I normally prefer using the thumbstuds anyway. This is just too stiff even for that to work consistently. Kind of sucks that the action on a $20 Ganzo knife with axis lock is far superior to this thing. Plus, they recess the omega spring! I thought I had a burr in the liners until someone pointed out it was the spring. Have not seen that on any other Axis type lock.
ponagathosGanzo was on my mind too, but I hated to go there. My $20 Lionsteel SR1 lookalike is a really solid knife.
EDIT: This was not meant to say that the Perpetua is a bad knife. I just meant that the Ganzo F720 is a surprisingly good axis style knife for next to nothing.
SbendGlad you like the grind, but we want to make sure that you're happy with the rest of the knife, too! The knives I looked at for QC didn't show any of these issues, but if you think yours has a manufacturing defect we'll be glad to check it out.
So far we only have 4 support tickets for any issues, including the pocket clip, but we'll keep an eye on that number. This knife is covered by Millit's warranty via Massdrop, so if you've gotten a unit with a manufacturing defect we will most definitely take care of you with a return or exchange. DougFLA123As I play around with this knife, I've noticed that the pivot seems to tighten from both sides. I have it to the point where the action is smooth, but it introduces just a hint of play. I've had better axis lock knives, but not by much. I might completely tear this one down soon to see if I can get the lock up perfectly rock solid and action silky.
LightningBRZI did take it apart, cleaned it and Nano-oiled it, and it has improved. I can flick the blade out, and it locks up somewhat solidly. There is still blade play though. I can’t find the happy medium where it’s lose enough to flick open and closed and also have no blade play. It’s either too tight, or there’s blade play!
JsunkdWhat I do is loosen all the screws, then tweak the handles until the blade is aligned, then tighten everything but the pivot, finally adjust the pivot tension.
