MD, T0mb3ry, Thanks for bringing this drop. This possibly is the most anticipated GMK keycap release of the year, and it certainly didn't disappoint. It looks amazing, has great storyline and over 400 kits sold in 2+ hours since the drop opened. As many are expecting this appears to be on track to rival or exceed Carbon in success and volume.
Those who remember or heard of Carbon folklore, probably have two big questions. 1. Will this break 2,000 base set mark that Carbon came close to? 2. Will there be further price drop when big volume happens a la Carbon?
On the price table, I don't see columns for 1000 base, 500 other kits. Is it fair to assume there are hidden columns? At 1000/500, possibly 2000/1000? I think giving some hints here will ensure thrust and allay pricing concerns for those who remember Carbon drop. I believe the general sentiment from Carbon participants is base OK starting pricing, other kits expensive with weak price curve.

OracleKevI think if some kits or base kit will close up to these numbers, then there will be probably some price drops. But dont get me by word, i am only the designer of Yuri ;)

OracleKevI think MD purposely keeps some price points hidden until there is indication those points are a possibility. You don't want to scare someone away because they think "$129 is too much, so I'll wait for $99!" and then never end up buying because the price only reduces to $119 or $109 instead of $99.

DukeDimwitMassdrop has a "commit" feature but I'm not sure how it would work on "multipart" group buys like this one. For single-product group buys it allows a potential customer to say yes but only if the lowest price is reached, which in turn accumulates the buyer pool at the same time.

ojraskYou still lose those people who commit purchase if you don't make the price point.
Why have a commit feature to 2,000 base kits (possible lowest price point?), if no GMK set has sold 2,000 base kits? That's not to say Yuri wont be the first - it very well may be with all the hype - but it is sound business practice to hedge your bets.

DukeDimwitTrue that. I guess it depends on the product and expected buyer group more than anything. Anyways I think the price points we currently can see are OK for the set. Massdrop will most probably introduce more price points as with the earlier popular drops. :)

DukeDimwitI don't follow you. Why would someone be scared away? Knowledge of further price reduction should entice more people to join upfront. They can always pull out if they are not happy about something. I bet at this point most people are thinking "My goodness, this is going to be huge, and price could be great as well" I still don't know what MD intends to do.

OracleKevBecause people will think "it can get cheaper!" so they don't want to buy in until the cheapest price point is unlocked, which is a negative feedback loop: while waiting for the price to get cheaper, they don't buy in, which in turn slows the price point unlock progression or possibly prevents the lowest price point from being reached, and, since the lowest price point hasn't been reached, they don't end up jumping in anyway.
It's easier for Massdrop to say "Hey! we have an additional price point at 2,000!" when we're at 1,700 base kits purchased and avoid potentially losing sales than for Massdrop to say "Hey! the lowest price point is 2,000!" when not even 300 kits have been purchased and possibly lose sales as a result.
Remember: think how stupid the average consumer is, and then remember half of consumers are even more stupid that that. Don't assume, just because it makes sense to you (and me), that open transparency is necessarily the smartest decision for a business - especially one that relies on group buys as a business model.

DukeDimwitThis is group guy with variable pricing.  Pricing curve within expected volume range should be published. If uninitiated folks behave and think wrongly, they should be educated.  Withholding public domain information and thereby discouraging community discussion does not help anyone.

OracleKevI don't disagree with you, but you stated you didn't understand, so I wanted to elaborate. You are free to agree or disagree with their practices, as am I, as is anyone else here, but that doesn't mean Massdrop has to be completely transparent. Most companies aren't.

DukeDimwitI appreciate the elaboration.  I just wanted to understand better.
MassDrop calls themselves "Community First" company, rightly so because without community participation and support, their business will not work. Since MassDrop is not a typical private enterprise, it doesn't make sense to set expectations based on "other companies."
With this drop, many potential buyers will look back to Carbon.  Big success with shared community benefit (i.e. aggressive price curve) is already expected.  Those potential repeat buyers will move on if they are not motivated--I'm not making this up, this is based on actual feedback.   As you know there are many other GMK group buys later this year.
I honestly think that MD should have put a tease column on the pricing table.  That would generate positive buzz and volume.  None of this amounts to asking for complete transparency.
As for your other comments on people and average consumers, I'm not gonna go there.
