This is my absolute favorite set of dice! Picked em up last year at GenCon from the MDG folks (who were very nice and helpful). The Lapis is hard enough to not crack or chip from rolling in dice trays, unlike some stones. I'd avoid tile or hardwood floors, but if you are on the fence... BUY em.
They're here and they're Gorgeous
wonderfull i like that
painted numbers or engraved?
reptile18
The Jasper dice had painted numbers.

They're painted, but don't feel like they are going to wear off anytime soon.
Those are some awesome looking dice, but man, that pricetag's a bit more than I can take! Maybe one day!
These are nice dice. Numbers look good in person, but I've only had them for a month so I can't speak for longevity.
I do really like the look and feel though. How about a drop of amethyst, or rainbow fluorite? :D
I want these dice, but is it worth it with the numbers painted on?
Does anyone have similar dice from the same maker? How do the numbers look in person?

I bought a set of these the last time they came through. They feel nice with a good weight, they look very nice, and even the bag they come in is of a high quality. I dropped the d6 off of a table and it landed on a corner, but the chipping is not that bad. The main complaint would be that the weighting is almost definitely not uniform; there are a few other materials naturally found in Lapis that alter the rolling balance of the dice, such as pyrite and quartz.
When the paint in the pic isn't even well applied... it does not reassure one as to the quality of the product.
Any reviews on this one? Worried if it'll chip off like the other gemstone dice that MDG sells.
I have a set of the "Cat's Eye" (I suspect it's a cheap synthetic). They look pretty, but the first time the d20 rolled off the table (anyone who plays games knows this happens) and fell < 3' to the wood floor a big chunk of one corner came off.
I don't mind paying the listed price for these dice, they are gorgeous, I just want a reasonable assurance that they can actually be played with.

Did you mean <3'?
TheMaker51
Yes of course. Newborn baby = constant brain farts.
Is this real Lapis Lazuli or synthetic?

Are the numbers engraved or just painted/printed on?
accela
Painted on.
I loved these and received them as a very generous holiday gift last year. I use them several times a week as my primary Magic counters and such. They always get compliments from strangers. Their appearance is easily worth the price, and their weight and numbering equally reflect the cost. I refer everyone to MDG now. I just wish I could swing that opalite set; they're so beautiful.
TDSO sells theses guys for $75 a set so this is looking tempting for me...

Then I need to stop shopping at TDSO. Lol

I really wish these had carved numbering - I can't justify spending nearly $50 for a dice set with stickered numbering.
andrewdcato
Are they stickered or painted on? I couldn't tell.
jeffn516
I have no idea. As far as I'm concerned, on a set this price neither is acceptable.
MDG dice drops usually have the option to add a nice quality dice bag for a few extra bucks. Is there no way we can get that option for these?
I'd like to know more about the vendor - I saw this online when referencing Lapis Lazuli as a gemstone: Handling: Lapis Lazuli is very brittle. Set and polish with care. Unfortunately, it is also very porous. To protect the surface Lapis is sometimes impreganted with wax or resin but nevertheless contact with any liquid except pure water is to be avoided. All kinds of acids and brines, perfume, creams and lotions, hair spray, insect repellent and human sweat (necklaces!) may ruin the colour.
So I want to know if these can even be played with.

I cut and polish lapis lazuli gemstones. It's a fine grain stone, fairly tough and I wouldn 't really call it brittle. If dropped from a great height or thrown onto a hard surface with a lot of force, it could chip or break, like most stones would. Polishing seals the surface of the stone and then it is generally rubbed with wax to enhance lusture. I haven't seen the stone change color from wear or handling. I think the dice would hold up fine to standard table top use.

I own a set of these dice and they roll fine, I use a vinyl playing mat for D&D and similar, and that seems to be more than sufficient as padding. They are heavy though, as are the metal dice from this vendor. So I wouldn't recommend throwing them as hard as you can. But honestly, it's the same with metal VS acrylic of plastic minis. You have to be more careful with the metal minis because you WILL chip paint or break off small fragile pieces if you're rough with them.
Lapis Lazuli is typically very brittle. Anyone have experience using these. Do they stand up to the abuse of rolling?

See above.
