If you want quality on the cheap, I'd go for Oxford's 90 GSM paper based notebooks and refills, like their Black n' Red notebooks.
Or check out Stapler's Arc notebooks with their 100 GSM refills. I just got my self an Arc notebook, and a "letter" size refill of 50 sheets is $4.85 each. These notebooks (in large size) on the other hand seem to go for $12.95 for 96 pages, which is 48 leaves. Now I'm not familiar with the US paper sizes, but the large size notebooks are a bit under A5 size and the letter size is a bit under A4 size, so I'm guessing that each leaf of the moleskine has about as much area as half the letter size refill... So yeah. BTW I'm from England so I work in ISO sizes and Pounds Sterling so if my understanding of size is lacking, or I haven't shopped around for a good price, that's why.
Also, the Black n' Red notebooks go for a bit less than that large moleskine goes for, but the Black n' Red notebook has 96 SHEETS (that means 192 pages!) of 90 GSM legal size paper. So that means 4 times as much paper, with far better quality, in hardbound covers for better writing, and probably superior binding, for less than the price of that one moleskine.
