DanthraxI am not saying they aren't mapping these boxes. I will say though that my tier 2 packs had absolute garbage, but my tier 1 packs had a foil Jin-Gitaxias in the first and a Yosei, the Morning Star AND Sensei's Top in the second. So maybe the junk boxes were mapped, but it seems much harder to do in the older ones.
How is it $50 MSRP? Explain that to me...
Manufacturer suggests $3.99 on most of those packs and $10.00 on Modern Masters 2017. So at BEST it's $26 MSRP.
Secondary pricing does NOT equal MSRP.
I understand. Market price, the Price that is Suggested by the Manufacturer for Retail saile is 3.99 (that is the the P S M and R parts of the MRSP). The thing is, msrp doesnt matter anymore. if you cant get something for a price, its mrsp is essentially the new price, which in my zendikar example, is about 20 bucks. I know the official msrp for a pack is 4, but i would have no problem calling it 20, since that is the market price that todays world goes by.
AllDayTayTayThey put correct MSRP on other items. Look at the Innistrad box.
Also look at the fact that you are getting 5 packs. Not all of those packs will be secondary value of $10 each. You only get one of the really rare packs, so on average the secondary value isn't even $50.
this shipping and handling seems dumb as hell, why would it be 2.75 for one set yet 7 dollars for 2 sets? do you want me to just make separate accounts and buy one on each to save on shipping costs or what?
foxyspYeah, I've seen that on Massdrop before. I ended up joining the drop twice, and saved on shipping despite creating more work and wasting more packaging. Makes no sense.
The expected value for this drop is $14.94.
I computed this using the expected value of individual packs from http://mtg.dawnglare.com/?p=sets&pack=1 at the time of this posting. I computed the value of the Shards of Alara Block Premium Foil Booster by taking the average of the Alara Block sets using TCG Foil pricing from the same site. You may view my work in the attached sheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xRW4CqL68Is4XYLq17BxcP8Na4_oedH6qDjqjmEJr8k/edit?usp=sharing
They have enough packs to support 780 grab bags, but the drop is limited to 340 which seems odd.
liryonLooks like this drop is live again in July 2017. The description of the drop has not changed, not even to add sets printed since the last drop. Since the sets have not changed, and prices move slowly the EV is still about $14-$15. It is very odd that they would have the exact same numbers of packs from the exact same sets available again a few months after the initial drop.
Calculated EV for this using Dawnglare per-pack EVs:
Tier 1 pack EV is $4.53 (biggest EV hits here are Modern Masters 13 and 15, Future Sight, Foil Alara, and Zendikar , with the general majority around $4-$5 EV. Misses include 10th Edition, Betrayers, and Innistrad)
Tier 2 pack EV is $2.26 (biggest EV hits are Modern Masters 17, Scars of Mirrodin, Coldsnap, and Fifth Dawn. General majority in $1-$2 range. Misses include Dragon's Maze, 8th and 9th Edition [considering their rarity])
Expected EV for this drop is $13.57. Do note though that this assumes you open all the packs, and that these packs don't go for their EV, but are marked up significantly due to collectible value, age, etc.
kodabbWell, we know the probabilities of getting each pack and the EV of each pack, so the sum of (probability)*(EV) = EV of that pack in the drop. Do that 4 times for the Tier 2 and once for the Tier 1 and you have the drop EV.
It's kind of like MTG repacks but with single boosters. You're paying an average of $7 a booster with the chance of a tier 1 pack that is worth more then $5 and then 4 x lower tiered boosters. That's a whole lot of floppy tacos right there!
This drop is live again in Feburary 2018 for $28.99 + $2.75. I've updated my EV calculation here ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xRW4CqL68Is4XYLq17BxcP8Na4_oedH6qDjqjmEJr8k/edit#gid=0 ) with today's prices. The EV comes to $15.14.
Note that the description of the drop has not been updated. It doesn't include any sets printed since July 2017, when this drop was last alive. That drop was limited to 340 packages, and this one is 250, but the pack quantities they show still total 780 packages.
No one should buy this drop because the EV is horrible. But also, no one should buy this drop until the description is updated to show what packs are no longer available because they were shipped out in the previous instances of this drop. The sellers should be held accountable to accurately report what the likelihood of each pack is, not what it was six months ago or more. The only way to do this is to not buy the drop until they update the description.
This drop is live again in May 2018 for 30.99 (lowest price tier) including shipping. They have updated the description and now include Amonkhet-Rivals of Ixalan. The EV comes out to 16.07, which is ~$1 higher than it has been for a while, but the price is about the same. So this is a slightly better deal, if you believe the product description. The calculation is done here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q3PTRtsDLES7ewo00muC3cqnRsaxuRlsARcq8IKd1D0/edit?usp=sharing using prices from http://mtg.dawnglare.com/?p=sets&pack=1 as of this posting.
Why shouldn't you trust that this product description is correct? Well, for more than a year now they've listed 12 all foil shards of Alara packs. When the drop first came out they offered 780 packs, each with a 12/780 chance at a all foil shards of Alara pack. Each and every drop they have offered has had this listed as a chance. So either, they are adding in a new all foil shards of Alara pack for each one they send out, or they aren't sending them out. Has anyone gotten one? Or, they have sent them all out and they are no longer available. The same can be said for every single tier one pack.
At least this time the product description was updated, but it was a rush job. Note that the new standard sets Amonkhet-Rivals of Ixalan have different formatting from the sets that have been listed for a while. They use : and one uses ; instead of ' - ' to separate the numbers. This gives me no confidence that the other set numbers we actually updated at all.
In conclusion, this drop continues to be really shady. They aren't listing what they really have to send out, because they aren't updating the numbers as they send out the good stuff. Even if they still have or actually do send out the good stuff, at the rates they say they are, the EV is about half of what you'd end up paying for the packs, which is quite a rip off, and not what massdrop should be about. But mostly, they can't be bothered to actually list what you might actually get and that's reason enough to not join this drop. We need to demand better transparency from massdrop with our wallets.
liryonwow, you're right, and that is VERY scummy of them!
Someone needs to report this shit, or at least ask MD to remove this obviously fraudulent listing (unless the Vendor posts REAL IMAGES of all packs sent to all purchasers)
liryonLets not buy this shit and spam the share button on our social media pages and link all the popular Youtubers. That'll shut this shit down real quick.
