Looking to get this instead of a blue yeti for gaming and possibly music, is this a good purchase?

sokolskeIf you have all the required hardware for using this microphone, this is a pretty good purchase. Unlike with the Yeti, you cannot just plug and play with this microphone. You'll need an XRL cable obviously, a mixer with option to disable phantom power since its a ribbon mic and phantom power can sometimes wreck havoc on the ribbon, possibly a good pre-amp depending on if your mixer pre-amp doesn't cut it, and some kind of microphone stand or arm to actually attach it to.
If you don't have all of that stuff or have no idea what any of that stuff even is, then the Blue Yeti is a better choice of mic that's much more easier to work with. It has its own stand, and connects via USB directly to your computer so you don't have to finagle with all this extra hardware if you don't want to.

LeReveur The easiest way to connect it to a computer is to use a sound card with an XLR input. Presonus Audiobox for instance or look for "xlr recording interface" in google for more... As Jerails said, you will need an XLR cable and a microphone stand. Both will depend on how you want to physically set up the microphone.

To be honest, I think the very first thing I should have realized is what the goal of having a microphone was for you. If you're just looking for a decent microphone that's quick and easy to use for recording something like voice-over on a video, making simple acoustic covers of music, or in-game VoIP chat on PC then acquiring a ribbon microphone would be getting a little ahead of ourselves.
Diaphragm USB mics like the Blue Yeti would be a safer option overall, being resilient and simpler to use while capturing a nice clear tone that accomplishes all of those tasks you wanted!

JerailsYeahhhhh I'm not jumping through all that just for a mic. Buying all that stuff would equal the cost of a yeti.
Thanks for your input!

sokolskeThat Cloudlifter preamp is AWESOME! I use it on my Cascade Fat Head II and Victor Ribbons as well as an SM58 in conjunction with my Roland OctaCapture. It really sends the much needed extra gain to the ribbons by allowing the use of phantom power through it to the ribbon as the Cloudlifter is passive. I have the single and double unit allowing me to run 3 ribbons or 2 ribbons and an SM58 this way with the extra input gain.
