The Nextool Taotool is a key-shaped multi-tool that won’t open doors—but it will open just about anything else. Constructed with a lockable cutting hook and a small blade edge, it’s capable of slicing through cardboard, paper, rope, straps, and much more Read More
I own one and it is incredibly handy. There's a bit of a knack to using the Tao -- "pulling" the hook through the box tape as opposed to cutting it is different -- but once I got a feel for the difference, I was fine. For one, I don't cut into things in the box accidentally when I'm using the Tao. And the tool actually can cut with more than one of its surfaces, which I missed at first. I can't speak to it dulling over time. I haven't noticed that, but I've only had mine a few months. Well worth the price. Would make a good Christmas add-on gift.
idarerickNot a lot to add. It’s a very fine tool, though I’m a ”knife guy” and probably reach more for my EDC than Taotool. Form factor probably plays a role. I can deploy my knife with one hand. The Tt requires two.
Hey Everybody - I just wanted to let everyone know that the first order of these is still stuck in customs and that is what’s holding up the shipping process. I organized another group buy for these without realizing the other order hadn't shipped - we try our best to never do this. Rest assured, we are trying to get these to everyone as quickly as possible! Thanks for your understanding!
Does anyone really need this? Their marketing video is very nice and makes me want to get one, but I don't really have problems opening packages with a knife or scissors.
Get yourself a spyderco honeybee and attach it to your keys, its even more inconspicious then a victorinix classic and very handy if your daily cutting tasks are package opening/cordage cutting etc
I know this post is 2 years old, but since this drop is active again... in what situation would you have to open a bunch of packages and NOT be at home or at work, or plan ahead to have a knife or scissors on you? Spontaneous Christmas present gift-giving alone in the woods?
Two for $25 here, while you can buy them for under $10 each on Amazon (https://amzn.to/2KOwkRZ), with free shipping, from multiple sellers . . . This one seems like one of the worst "deals" I've seen on Massdrop. ;-/
OldoilerSomething tells me sharpening it wouldn't be easy considering the shape of the blade. You'd probably also damage the Teflon coating.
Personally at this price I'm happy to consider it a disposable item.
I found this on knifecenter.com for $13.95 with an MSRP listed as $15. Shipping was calculated for me (east coast conus) as $3. That's a total of $10 savings for me to go elsewhere (40% savings over the price offered here), and is a much saner price for a keychain tool imo, no matter how awesome it is! I think this may be an error on knifecenter's side, as the MSRP in Euros is 14.95 (inc VAT).
Really like this product and tend to hate the "buy it elsewhere" posts, but that's what I found. Did I mess up? Ordering from knifecenter to see if it works.
DC_JCI believe you are ordering only one from knifecenter for $16.95 but you get a two pack from massdrop at $26.74 at current price possibly dropping to 24.74 for two.
Anyone who's had this, how's the durability of the inner-hook blade? I can see it lasting awhile for tape / thin stuff, but for extended usage on cardboard will it hold up? Will sharpening kill it?
Teflon will not increase cutting power. It will decrease material drag across the blade, (tape glue buildup causes this quickly), but it will wear off itself quickly enough anyway. Also, this isn't a Scandi, Full Flat, or Convex grind blade. Your sharpening implement shouldn't be making contact with that part of the blade.
Sandvik 12C27 steel is a relatively soft steel, usually around 56-58 HRC. It won't hold an edge for long, compared to most modern knife steels. Probably a bit better than AUS-8 or 440C, IMO. However, it is easy to sharpen, and is definitely better steel than you usually get in keychain knives. An excellent value for the cost.
If you're cutting enough cardboard to be worried about wearing one of these out, get an actual pocket knife with high end steel, or a box knife.
(I'm getting 6 of these. Great stocking stuffers.)
Samuel_SturmI misspoke- I meant to reduce residue. But the point still stands that the teflon is a coating on the blade. Take that for what it is, though I'm also not sure the surface area on the teflon. coating.
