Here's a review from candlepowerforums. The TA40 appears to get higher output using 2 non-rechargeable CR123As over a single rechargeable 18650. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?402646-Review-Nextorch-TA40-and-accessories-(18650-2x-CR123)

LucentIsn't that always the case? At least in the drops here I've seen. 2 of the cr123 in series produce a higher voltage.
