Got mine today. Fairly disappointed. The implication is that it spreads light 360 degrees, but in reality only the tip lights up. It is effectively a flashlight covered in white plastic. The sides do not light up and you need to attach it to something and aim it at whatever you want to light up. It is not as effective at serving as a lantern as the name implies. First time I've been disappointed in a Massdrop purchase.
TVRussellWhy would anyone be surprised that just the tip lights up since the battery takes up most of the little lamp? I don't know how you'd light it up around the battery, itself, so it only makes sense to me that the tip would be the only part that lights up.
I’ve been shopping here for several years and have probably made around 30 purchases. Maybe more. This site used to have the best deals, unique gear or partnerships you could only find here, or obscure really cool stuff that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere or even be aware of. That is no longer the case. They are a straight product amalgamator that harvests junk “deals” now and people should be made aware. I said “cheaper elsewhere” because it was available cheaper on several other reputable vendor sites besides Amazon or Walmart. The business model has changed here and it’s unfortunate. Sorry if you find it tacky to be reminded of that.
TPeterson13I don't think people need to be made aware of Drop's downhill slide. The regulars can see it plainly enough (and still find the occasional deal or compelling Drop exclusive), and newbies will learn relatively painlessly. This is still Drop.com, and whatever your views on capitalism their model seems to be working well enough for them. If they continue to ignore complaints and suggestions, the business will suffer eventually.
noix_rougeMy thoughts exactly... I guess aesthetics don't matter much in the deep woods, but I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face if I saw that floating towards me in the dark!
This arrived prior to the expected ship date, which was a nice surprise (but a day after a power outage, ironically). I picked this up to keep with my drawing supplies, to fill in when available light is insufficient. The white plastic helps diffuse the bright light, so it's less harsh and more spread out, this offers hands-free versatility, the light can be directed (unlike using a standard flashlight hands-free), and there's a decent run time for my needs (I can easily toss a spare USB rechargeable battery in my box). The twist on/off/mode is a bit awkward, but I'm not sure any other means of operation would be less so, given the design (which is essential to it's purpose). Yes, it is essentially a flashlight in a tube, but it's the white plastic tube and the stand that make it work for my needs. Spouse likes it so much that we'll have to get another one, or mine might vanish! I think this would also be a nice option for live streaming, photography, travel, reading, writing, (and obviously camping, hunting, fishing and power outages), or anything else where you might want a bright white light with reduced glare and high portability.
@TheMantledMaven - What an excellent review, thank you so much for sharing your experience with this product. I may just have to get one next go-round to put in with my art supplies as well!
Ok so first impression is good with a touch of disappointment. Its a bunch heavier than i expected. Light is otherwise great. Im looking for a way to remove the magnetic base and clip without damaging it since i can do without that when backpacking.
It points 360° for those of you who didnt understand the engrish.
Lighting is great, i especially appreciate the long life on low. The plastic tube is a solid hunk of plastic feel, when i first got it out of the package i thought for a second that the tube was glass or ceramic or something.
So mostly is fits my bill of single cell, lightweight, simple lantern. I still wonder if the nitecore la10 wouldn't better fit my requirements.
dandanak5Lol im all for it but i am not sure id be best for that. Tried to set up a poll for the patagonia nano puff pants but only got 6votes. Could be nobody wants it but i think i just dont know what the smell im doing.
kalieaire...Which would be useless for me as I'd only need one. So yeah, my first comment stands. There's no way a sane person would pay the same amount in postage for an item. Just no.
doug100It's a solid twist. Check out the review videos on youtube, it's pretty good if you need something around your car to look under the hood or to mount on the edge of a fender well when you're changing a tire.
