Is this backlit LED? Can it be modded to take translucent caps and in switch LEDS?
Krustyboomer
Nope, not backlit at all. Unsure about modding that in, but IMO it's not worth it on such a budget model.

only $5 more on Amazon and you don't have to wait 3 years for it to ship. :) Sorry Massdrop, get better dealz...

That's what I meant by " (with OK letter printing, though I heard it wears off fast) ".
smileybarry
ok
Interesting price. Too bad there's no Spanish layout :/
“...and dedicated multimedia keys.” Maybe I misunderstand the use of dedicated here, but it looks like the multimedia keys are shared with the function keys to me.
The price is a few bucks higher on Amazon, but that one comes with Kailh switches instead of Outemu.
Bought it there a while back and it's a pretty good budget mech keyboard, with Kailh Brown being a bit stiffer and springier than MX Brown. Good as a starter keyboard. Basically one of the cheapest (if not *the* cheapest) mech keyboards with good-ish non-linear switches that you can find, with the added bonus of a having a semi-steel build.

I received one from Amazon this week. It looks like they switched to Oetemu there as well. I like the Oetemu blue though.
Is the cord detachable?
Infectedbush
If it's the same model in the picture (it's not the latest refresh) then no, it doesn't have a detachable cable.
$26 shipping???????
I would have bought 3 more (got one in the last drop), but $60+ in shipping is a 4th keyboard... is there a UK nixeus reseller?
anotherhowie
Amazon.
How's the compatibility with linux and mac os for the multimedia shortcuts?
[moderated]
Mine has arrived after a week in various warehouses (DHL weren't really on the ball)... first impressions: the key action is nice, the case is a lot darker than I expected (I was hoping for something more like my aluminium MBP), the key printing on the replacement mac keys is a bit smeary, and a totally different font to the rest of the keys! (bold vs light, and option is dark grey instead of white). So, great deal if you are intending to replace the caps anyway, especially for $60.
Mine just arrived!
As my first foray into mechanical keyboards, I quite like the feeling over my old mac keyboard. I just want to sit around typing things right now, but sadly I have no papers to write or any work to do... What a shame.....
@nixeus , It's worth noting that I can get this on Amazon Prime new right now for less and receive it before I get this Massdrop delivered. I think Massdrop should just give up on cheaper items and focus more on special rare/customized items.

Does this keyboard come in the ISO layout?
DrakeFazuku
Thank-you for the question. Currently it is not available in ISO Layout.
Are cherry mx keycaps compatible with this keyboard?
Carlo6926
Kailh switches are p.much cherry clones, so yeah
Ordered one with Browns on Amazon and got it in last night. I'll play with it some and report back later in the weekend. Have a paper to write so I'll get some good use out of it. It's my first mech so don't know how relevant it'll be to some people. Chance I may send it back and get one with blues.
Edit: Didn't actually end up having to write the paper like I thought so I'll just go off what I have so far. I'm not used to having friction when I'm typing, so that's one thing that I've had to get over so far. I will say that the feeling of browns is nice though and the sound of typing is quite satisfying. No click like blues, but the clack of the keyboard is nice. I feel like I'm definitely going to have to get a wrist rest for this. It's not super comfortable typing when the keys are elevated as much as they are and your wrists are just on the desk. Something to consider as an add on in the future Nixeus. I'd love to see some backlighting down the road but I'm fine without it. This is a nice cheap way to get into mech keyboards and eventually, once I upgrade, I'll probably end up bringing it to work and using it as an office keyboard. I'm looking forward to modding it some. I'll probably get some custom keycaps and might spray paint the aluminum plate. It seems solidly built and not cheap feeling. Another thing to consider might be to add a function lock. It would be nice to use the multi media keys without having to hold down the function key every time. Something along the lines of how the Microsoft Surface Type Cover is. Overall, I'm happy with it and for $50 plus shipping ($8.75 for US), I think it's a solid deal.
StarkHarle
Hi Starkharle,
Thank-you for the feedback and suggestions. I will forward them to the KB Product Manager.
IMHO, next time Massdrop should just go for the Noppoo Lolita Spyder 87 METAL EDITION, with a full metallic case. Now that would be something people want.
search
Nixeus, bring that over as the Moda "Elite", will ya?
kschang
Hi kschang,
Thank-you for the comment - we have a full metal 87 key MODA in development, but it will not be using that tooling/case.
How hard do you think it would be to modify this keyboard to use a Teensy with TMK? I'm looking at Tom Hardwares review...
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nixeus-moda-v2-keyboard,4412.html
Does anyone know what controller they have soldered on there?
Just looking for an inexpensive way to get into TMK.
adamclerk
Thank-you for the question. The Micro-controller is EM611 - its proprietary and you may not find much public information for it.
adamclerk
The most inexpensive way to get into TMK is CM Storm QuickFire Rapid w/ "Frosty Flake" controller replacement. You can get both together for just just $100 with the least labor. Or you can buy a GH60/derivative kit and assemble it yourself.
Can I change the switches from Kailh blue to Kailh red?
I want only cherry mx, this isn't cherry mx :(
ansh_nanda
Nope
Hi I would just like to confirm that the keys are all standard sizes. I would also like to know what the keyboard case is made out of, is it anodized alloy or painted metal?
jacksb
Hi jacksb,
Thank-you for the question. Yes, the keys are all standard sizes (we tested it with a few after market key caps to confirm) and the keyboard metal plate is painted metal.
Is the logo by the arrow keys engraved or printed on? This looks perfect for a project of mine but I need the whole plate to be smooth, (no engraving) Thanks in advance.

Dr_Feelgood
Hi Dr_Feelgood, Thank-you for the question. The logo is printed and not engraved. So it is easy to remove if you are looking to mod the keyboard.
nixeus
Cool, thanks
I have one of these, and it's good (I would buy another), but is it possible to get some other switch types like Gaterons or Cherry MX? I think it would add more value to this drop since you can already find this on Amazon for a similar price (if you're in the US at least).

Of course, I wouldn't expect it for free :) just that currently the drop doesn't make much sense for me since amazon is marginally more expensive but would be here in a couple days. A "massdrop exclusive" type of version would be interesting to me even if it was more expensive.
neocpp
Definitely agree with Massdrop focusing more on “exclusive” items. Group buys don’t really make any sense with mass market items. It’s the stuff that’s not in stock, not available on Amazon or Best Buy, the custom items that we’re willing to wait for that makes group buys worthwhile. Now, if this was a kit …
Looks nice for a non-lighted keyboard, and at least the caps have a clean font. Anyone know if they make a full-size version?
Drose25
Thank-you for the question. Yes we make a full size 104 key version that is just announced and shipping today = MODA PRO.
Good seeing more mechanical keyboards being available at low prices.
Not everyone here can afford $300+ for a single keyboard on MD. You need to think about the students, welfare recipients and the down right stingy here.
People who don't want to spend a fortune, to enjoy some mechanical goodness ; )
