No shipping to Canada of a knife by the name of "Ontario". How sadly ironic.
Anyone know why MD's shipping policies on items is so all over the place? They ship other knives here all the time.
gaknakThanks for the link! It's always good to see what the purchasing options are, so thanks.
For me, who has so many knives that I'm usually not in a hurry to receive a new one I just purchased, I would rather support Massdrop over Wallyworld.
But for those who need it fast, glad to hear this option is available!
K.T.NK.T.N - you are right to support Massdrop, especially when the pricing is close. I was hurrying out the door when I made the comment and didn't go into more detail. I wanted to show that Walmart, which I believe has stores globally, might be an option for those outside the U.S. that can't purchase knives from Massdrop and also show that this is not a killer deal like many Massdrop opportunities are.
I like the knife but have come to value a knife that has enough of the tang protruding from the end of the handle to be used as a hammer. I don't know how well the wood would hold up to that kind of use.
I've gotten in a habit of having to verify details and looking up omitted details from Massdrop (MD). In this case there's no mention of the model. I believe this is model 6527, but can't say for certain. If so, the retail price from Ontario Knife Company (OKC) is $140, so actually higher than Massdrops listed MSRP of $120.
Secondly, for a camping/survival knife, the thickness and composition of the blade are both critical elements. It appears to be 3mm thickness which is great, up to 3.5mm are ideal in my opinion.
If it is in fact OKC and model 6527, they provide this critical data:
BLADE THICKNESS 0.125 in (3.18mm)
BLADE MATERIAL 5160 Carbon Steel
HARDNESS 53-55 HRC
Since this deal includes (what appears to be) a cheap Chinese fire-steel/striker (unnecessary) and a decent sheath, this is a very good deal overall on a solid camping knife. The carbon steel is excellent, good hardness and easy to sharpen and maintain. Just will need to clean and dry carefully, wipe down with a drop of oil before putting away. This knife should last many years of hard use, or a lifetime with occasional use.
Great job MD; recommend you verify the model, and if it's 6527, then post that, and update with the info I provided.
ecolemanI think it's 5160 carbon, so for the price, excellent value. Great general purpose camping/hiking/survival knife. Skinning animals I'd recommend something smaller (in the 2.5-3" range).
This is a good drop!
