I have a significant collection of wonderful mechanical watches (and this one is very nice and at a good price) but I hardly wear any of them anymore because I now have an Apple Watch for less than half this price and which can track your location with maps, read email and texts, track heart rate, sleep quality, exercise, provide a video of the moon phases and the earth, and choose many different faces and bands, as well as make a payment or talk to someone over the phone via the watch provided your iphone is nearby.
The change in technology is awesome. The beauty of the mechanical watch craftsmanship is undeniable as well. I will always keep at least one beautiful mechanical watch but the rest will be up for sale.
Apple already is the world's largest watch seller. The trend is accelerating...and I state this with both sad nostalgia as well as excitement. Dick Tracy is now here and we can hear him!

SunsetShoresTis your money and you should spend it how you like. But there Are a few small items you neglect:

Apple’s latest and greatest runs for 18 hours a day - my cheapest Chinese alibaba special watch has at least twice that.
planned obsolescence. Mechanical and quartz watches are, to use a cliche, timeless. No updates to run properly, no need for radio signals ( I suppose certain atomic quartz models fit this as well)
repairability. I can take any of seiko, my Swiss watches, and even my Chinese specials to any competent watchmaker in the world. If your Apple Watch breaks, you’re either relying on a mall kiosk, the Apple store, or you’re binning the entire thing in the trash

i could go on, and I want to reiterate that it’s your money. If you’re sellin your watches, I’m sure many here would want to purchase. But an 18 hour lasting digital postage stamp device with planned obsolescence reliant on ancillary technology to function properly is essentially the polar opposite of a well made timepiece designed to be repaired and last you the rest of your life. As for the watch, it’s nice but I enjoy a proper moonphase more. Happy Friday all.

SunsetShoresMy Apple watch hasn't been charged in months. It was a gift from my parents over the holidays, and I find it redundant. I'd much rather use my phone or Fitbit for the reasons you mentioned and look at one of my beautiful mechanical timepieces all day.

WatchyoutalkingaboutThanks for a thoughtful reply. Certainly understand your love and appreciation for an excellent mechanical watch since I too love them. My post was really to both note the dawn of a new reality and share both my excitement and sadness about that very passage. Have any of us come across a working Sundial during our lifetime? They were awesome! Wishing you great joy with your moonphase. Can it call for emergency help anywhere in the world and tell first responders where you are with the press of a button?

MisterPinkwhat? One thing a unique mechanical watch can bestow is prestige...more so than the less expensive Apple Watch which is becoming commonplace. I merely point out the many more uses that the new technology brings.

This drop is for a beautiful watch that costs about twice what a current Apple Watch costs but has no actual functional comparison. This drop is for a great piece of jewelry which is great but be mindful of the changes taking place is my comment in sum. I look forward to any actual contribution you wish to make!

DennisJamesCertainly understand your feelings since I too held them. I loved my mechanical timepieces and used a Fitbit just for exercise. Turned out for me that the Fitbit was a gateway drug to my Apple Watch. I’d love to still wear my other timepieces but the functionality of the newfangled thing has me hooked.. Even wear it at nite to track.very detailed sleep data etc. Good for you that you have not been seduced by all the connectivity and data including health, air quality and investments!! Pray that I can find the way to enjoy my timepieces yet again. Best wishes.

SunsetShoresActually, the Breitling Emergency Beacon line of watches not only calls for help, but sends an international distress signal on both the 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz frequency via the Cospas-Sarsat orbital. Sad to say your electronic trinket can’t do that. But as a season Apple Watch loving expert horologist, I’m sure you knew all about Breitling line of watches. As I’m sure you’re well aware of the quartz crisis in the 1970s, the rise of digital wearables back in the 1989s, and the imminent demise of an industry that just last year, in 2018, was with over 10 Billion (with a B).

SunsetShoresMy point is comparing the Oris with your apple watch is like comparing a vinyl player with your Cayin N5ii, of course it lacks in functionality, but that's not exactly what most of us buy it for. We get that the mechanical movement technology is outdated, hell most of it are less accurate than a USD 15 Casio digital watch, but again that's not exactly why we buy an automatic watch. If I want to buy an apple watch it won't be for the same reasons why I buy an Oris.

Apple watches get updates as needed--I suppose the analog equivalent is a "servicing"?
If an Apple watch needs to be repaired, it can be repaired by Apple. Not so different than taking a Seiko watch to Seiko? PS: buying something that's "designed to be repaired" isn't the best selling point I've read today.

Judging from your holier than thou comments about technology, can we assume you apply your religion to the phone you carry?

lukinidTrust me, we don't buy Apple watches for the same reason we buy toasters either. You keep making lame comparisons that miss the point: an Apple watch is more than a watch, in the same way an iPhone is more than what a "phone" used to be, twenty years ago. There's plenty of room in the world for both technologies (assuming you have two wrists). Meantime, when Oris introduces a watch that plays my music library, receives text msgs and takes calls in a pinch, come back and give it a second shot.

RayFI wear my watches 24 hours a day. That’s right, watches. Plural. One one each wrist, one on each ankle, and I can’t tell you where the emergency watches for security reasons. Fixing an Apple Watch requires going to something called a Genius Bar. The only bars I go to have dark liquor and women with even darker hearts. As for the Breitling, I had the same salesman. I pulled the pin and walked away, then waited for the SAS to arrive and in the midst of the ensuing confusion took the watch home.

RayFThat's what I'm trying to say, if I'm considering buying the Oris, it won't be because it can plays my music or track my heart rate. It's basically a jewelry, that's why comparing it with the apple watch functionality is useless, but I guess you're too dense to understand that. And yes I own both smartwatch and regular watches.

RayFHi Ray 👋 I was just kind of cruising by and stuck around for a bit to read through the back and forth. Good stuff!
