Keep your paws warm and dry with the Alti gloves and mitts from Outdoor Research. Both are made from waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex and PrimaLoft Gold insulation for superior cold-weather resiliency Read More
I would think that the gloves would have more stitching and therefore be the more expensive than the mitts but the mits are $30 more. You lost me at $130 for mitts.
This week, I used my Altis to climb six 46er high peaks in the Adirondacks in -40 windchill temps. The freezing air was like fire on my skin but my hands stayed warm all day inside the mitts! One thing to check if you order them: the heat-pack pocket on one of my liner mitts is half sewn shut. Not a big deal but definitely a defect. I bought the mitts last year and only noticed that this week.
I have a unique question regarding these gloves...when I was younger, I suffered mild frostbite with my fingers and toes. Due to this "damage", I have had an extremely difficult time finding any glove/mitten which will keep my fingers from becoming painfully cold in cold weather. What are the chances these gloves would be sufficient to keep my fingers warm...or at least, warmer? Thank you for any info you can provide!
Hey Danny. (I know my response is a little "delayed", but I did want to make sure I let you know I read your post.) I am highly appreciative for your opinion, information, & link you left for me in your answer to my question. I will tell you, based on your post and my own research I decided against purchasing the O.R. gloves listed on MD. I looked on the O.R. website you left for me & due to my "extreme" situation, I decided I am going to put some money aside for a pair of the battery or rechargeable O.R. gloves to purchase for next season. From my past experiences, I have had more success with mitts and/or battery heated products...so I will be purchasing one air of O.R. heated mitts (have not decided on the exact model yet). And you were correct when you mentioned O.R. having a large selection of quality gloves and mitts! I was definitely impressed! Thank you again for taking the time to help me out regarding my "interesting" situation! (My frostbite incident happened over 25 years ago, so I have learned how to deal with, and manage, this situation as much as I can through heat packs for hands and feet, etc. I learned [the hard way] that when my fingers start turning purple...it's time to figure out how to warm them up...immediately! Ha ha!) The residual effects from the frostbite can be extremely painful/frustrating/annoying at times, but I feel incredibly fortunate when thinking about how much more devastating the event "could have" been for myself and the others involved...
By the way, it's the people like yourself that make the "Discussion" section of MD valuable!
