First produced by Pelikan in the early ‘90s, the New Classic P381 features a brass body with a red marble lacquered finish and a notably slender design. The gold-plated clip and trim complement the 14-karat-gold broad nib Read More
That pen couldn't say "early 1990s" any more loudly if had big shoulder pads, a mullet, and an acid-wash denim nib :)
That said ... it's a handsome specimen of early '90s slim pen design.
A couple caveats/facts about this pen (which I picked up on the last drop):
--It is veeeeerrrrrrryyyyy (I mean very) slim, skinny, thin, pick your moniker. Like just thicker than the converter skinny. Just so you know.
--Mine has flow issues, like a lot of others have reported. Because the nib is so slim, and the tip so broad, it behaves almost like a stub.
--It is a very smooth nib. Also very flexible with respectable line variation. If you can keep it from railroading. Use wet ink.
It posts very well and is well balanced.
My opinion: If you don't have any 14k nibs in your collection or if you are a fountain pen newbie, i wouldn't start here.
lammattYeah. Even the MSRP. $95!
This is the Early 90s MSRP. I'm guessing this is New-Old-Stock.
Solid gold nib at this price, what a steal.
Still would rather pay more and get the Diplomat Aero with SS nib even the broad SS. A slim Pelikan with broad nib, it just isn't right.
I signed up for the blue right away (even though it looked black to me). While debating between green and red for the second pen (inclined slightly toward the green), the greens were gone, so the decision was made for me. Blue and green are really going fast, either these are popular or there were fewer of them to start with. It will be nice for M to let us know in future how many do they have in each color. As the event in the past two days demonstrated, we will find out anyway, just that we don't like to find these out in ways that lead to disappointments.
