Yes, I am puzzled how the 701 is already sold out. Was only 1 or 2 available? The price for the 701 is good, but you can get an 801 refurb for $900, so $1200 is less of a deal, particularly when the differences between the 701 and 801 are so small.
If Massdrop can get more 701's, I will join the drop. Please, please, please.

This is from the Pioneer website: "What’s more, the SC-LX701 is ready for the HDR (High Dynamic Range) and BT.2020 next generation video standards." When I asked about this, the response back was that this is addressed in the firmware update. You can confirm.

So here's the situation I'm faced with. Let me know if I'm understanding this correctly. I'm sure plenty of people are in the same situation.
My TV (LG OLED B7) has HDR (Dolby Vision, Atmos, maybe HDR10 also, not sure) and 4k. If I launch Netflix 4k HDR content, the video should all be in 4k with HDR, but since ARC (Audio Return Channel) has some drawbacks depending on the TV, I could lose DTS (and definitely Atmos) and be stuck with 2 channel audio. If I connect all of my source devices (Oppo 4K bluray player, Chromecast, XBOX) over HDMI directly to the TV, and then connect the receiver using optical (toslink), I'm missing out on Atmos, which might be ok since I probably won't ever add Atmos speakers to my HT.
The Oppo UDP-203 has 2 HDMI outs (1 for the TV and 1 marked "audio" for this receiver), so I could get HDR content from 4k Bluray (and all the other goodies, DTS-X, Atmos, etc), and then I'm not hindered by the receiver's lack of HDR. In this scenario, I THINK you would have to use HDMI to the Oppo, but I think you would still lose all the full surround features when using the Apps on the TV, since it's going to be back to using ARC for the audio. The Oppo also has an Optical, but I'm not sure if you can use Optical for your sound, while doing HDMI for video. There might be caveats to it.

The worst part of this industry is that you still have to get every single component on board plus we're dealing with proprietary and competing tech as "standards" My guess is by the time its all sorted out and it all works there will be a new vision or audio "standard" that we'll all desire.

So no HDR compatibility. At least not Dolby Vision. Maybe not even HDR10. You'll have to go SC-LX(X)02 for that.

all the "x01" models are from 2016 actually. the "x02" refresh from 2017-2018 only go up to the 502 unit, the 701, 801, & 901 won't get an "x02" refresh this year (straight from Pioneer).
