The $680 add on seems like overkill, but I guess $1580 is not too bad for a decent 5.2.4 Atmos setup. From what I’ve read, discrete ceiling speakers are the way to go though. I wish there was a package with two additional surround sound speakers for a 5.1.2 setup.
With the caliber of sound that I'm getting from the Pioneer Elite bookshelf model (also offered on Massdrop)... and considering that these speakers are brand new with a 2-year warranty and support from Pioneer, surely this Atmos-capable tower/center/sub bundle would rank among the best options available.
Though if your budget is $2000, I recommend getting the starter bundle ($899), a pair of the Pioneer SP-EBS73-LR (bookshelf model in this series; when it's available on Massdrop again for $330), and an SVS subwoofer that suits your budget/looks/power requirements.

Nothing comparable under 2000. I am a broke audiophile. Online reviews of these speakers are correct amazing sound for the price. If you've never owned high-end speakers, you will be amazed.

Subwoofer is the weakpoint of this combo. Also these are Dolby Atmos enabled speakers! This should be right in the title as it's a huge feature. Back to the sub though, only goes to 30hz when a sun at this price should go all the way to 20hz or lower. Would be a great setup for 2.0 music, but then why are you paying extra for Atmos top firing and a center? I own the bookshelf version of these and the center. Use a SVS PB-1000 for my sub. They're good, would recommend. But keep in mind towers aren't needed in a lot of rooms. The bookshelf version of most floorstanding speakers is identical except for one woofer instead of three. The concentric three-way style of this speaker means most of the audio comes from the top elements. Extra woofers on the standing model provide more bass, but your crossover should send a lot of it to your sub. Check the price of the bookshelf version vs the floorstanding version and it becomes clear which is a better buy. To me this is just an unsold product dump (the purpose of massdrop I guess) but there's reason these aren't selling, and why they're bundled. You can do better for the price in the exact same product line. Buy four Pioneer Elite bookshelves, the center and a separate sub, you've got a great 5.1.4 for the same price. EDIT: Okay I lied about that last part. 4 Bookshelves plus a center would run you $1300 and you'd still be down a subwoofer. Even two bookshelfs and a center would be $800 right now. (Sometimes the center hits $200 though). So this is a hella deal consider MSRP. Just be aware of the unfortunately low sub, and extra woofers you gotta power on the floors. EDIT 2: Just realized massdrop has the bookshelfs for $330 a pair when you clip that coupon. So that makes a 5.1.4 $960 + a sub ($860 when the center hits $200). Since I would really recommend a separate sub anyways... I'm gonna say go with the bookshelves and find the center on sale. Unless you got a really big open room and are content with 3.1.2, then still buy this bundle :)

I know it's hard to trust the ravings of the internet, but in my case it was definitely worth it: because of the physical characteristics of the room and the frequency of the bass, it's just not possible to get an even bass response across the room with just a single sub. I'll take two mid- (or even low-) end subs over a high end sub any day :) Don't judge me too hard for getting the sealed subs over the ported ones :D. There was some living-room space compromise involved :) Anyway, totally worth it, definitely recommended. And to anyone considering this drop, definitely consider SVS for augmentory sub(s) if you pick up this deal (even if you don't switch subs right away). SVS also has really good try before you keep options too, so you could try it side by side with the bundled sub. Read up on sub placement too; sticking it in the middle of a carpeted room will definitely sound weaker than sticking it in the corner on a solid floor :)

YOLOdactylSVS is amazing, especially the subs. I have a full 5.1 SVS system and it rocks.

for the price this is a really good starter bundle, even adding the 2 extra rears is a good deal on these, but read all the specs on the equipment before you buy, because thats what this is is a starter set-for less than 2k you get a pretty decent set up,i dont know the sound quality of these though,by the specs they arent that impressive, give them plenty of burn in time before you hit high volumes, the sub seems to be one of the weak points of this set though,it will not hit all the lows you want, and it is in an enclosed box-maybe their 10" woofer doesnt displace enough air to need to be ported,i dont know-make sure it is what you want before you pull the trigger-they are higher priced elsewhere, but not many places have this set available,so that tells me something too-i am an Audiophile, and just dont want people not to be happy with the sound they are hearing

These speaker are rated at 4 Ohms impedance and 86db sensitivity. They are gonna need a lot of power and control. Not all amps can drive 4Ohm speakers - check your specs before you join!

I am new to home theatre audio. Do I need a receiver for this unit to set up to a smart tv?
RareAirsYes, these are unpowered speakers (except the sub) and must be driven by an amp. The TV will send the raw audio steam over HDMI or optical (TOSLINK) to the receiver, which decodes the audio into individual channels, amplifies it, and sends it to the speakers.
Just make sure the receiver has enough channels to drive the speakers you want to use. If you plan to use Atmos, you'll need a second connection to each of the floorstanding speakers to drive the up-firing "height" woofer/tweeter. Thus, each floorstanding speaker would end up with 2 sets of wires going to 2 channels on the receiver.

Can I purchase just the pair of Floor Standing SP-EFS73 speakers alone?

I already own the sub, center, and bookshel. Yes they are awesome! That’s why I want to purchase the floor standing with the others.

jacksapolskyOne tower retails for $599, as does the center. They’re asking $799 for two towers and a center. Buy it and then sell the center for like $400. It’ll pay for half your purchase.

Can anyone explain how these bundles work? The description notes 4xFloorstanding speakers for Bundle 2 in one spot, but that doesn't seem to be the case in other spots. Obviously this makes no sense. I think I've figured it out, and if I'm reading this right, this is the worst deal Massdrop has had for these speakers since I've been following them.

It’s always been a 2xfloor, center, and sub for $899 (if your memory is correct, which I think it is). That said, the sub isn’t one I’ve ever been thrilled about.
rggbYou are correct. I remembered I posted about it here last year. So the sub was removed and the price lowered by $100. The bundle is still worth purchasing. One can put that $100 towards another (superior) sub.
