Update: I can no longer vouch for this product; after about two weeks of use, the cable itself has shorted somehow. Plugging just the cable (with nothing else attached) into a USB port immediately engages fault protection or causes a malfunction; this occurs on several different devices.
Edit: After doing some testing, here's where I'm at: - At the magnetic end of the cable, the Ground and +5V lines have somehow been shorted together - At the time that the cable failed, the USB power bank that it was plugged into began overheating and venting fumes - I don't know whether the power bank failed and overloaded the cable somehow, or whether the cable failed first and damaged the power bank - Neither device *should* have been vulnerable to damage by the other, so either way both are at fault - In particular, if the cable failed spontaneously then it is to blame for putting me at risk of being blown up by a large battery - On the other hand, if the power bank overvolted the cable, that still really should not cause the cable to start short circuiting other devices. At most, the cable should stop functioning, and even that's a stretch. A cable should just be some wires. - If the cable was damaged by overvolting, my guess is that it's because of the circuitry in the magnetic end to turn on the LED when current is flowing
Regardless, I can't recommend this product. Given that I see other brand names with completely identical products (including SweetLF, from whom I purchased two more cables before this one failed), these cables seem like they might be the typical sort of shipped-from-China product you get for such a low price because they're the ones that failed quality control for a more well-known brand.
Edit 2: Oh, and the reason 5 pins can reversibly carry a 4-pin connection? The outer rim is also an electrical contact. Unlike the rest of this post, that's not a criticism, just an observation for those interested.
