It would be a mistake to dismiss these watches, or any other Porsche Design product, as some kind of licensed car-guy accessory.
Porsche Design has always been a separate entity. It was founded in 1970 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche after the Porsche family stepped down (as they say) from day to day operations of the car company. Ferdinand had served as head of design up to that point and was pretty good at it--he's the guy who designed and developed the Porsche 911 we all know and love today.
Having left the company, and now with time on his hands and (one assumes) plenty of cash, Ferdinand founded Porsche Design as a way to channel his interest and passion for design into all things not cars. So yes, the watches, computers, sunglasses, pipes, luggage and lots of other stuff he designs, all have the Porsche name on them--but they are not licensed, car-guy products (like those cheesy BMW watches that keep showing up here).
All that said, there is at least one connection between the two companies where watches are concerned--the Porsche car company has committed to buying 20 Porsche Design watches each year to reward and recognize the service of it's long-time employees. In other words, if you retire from Porsche, you only get a watch--not a Carrera.

Does this come with the manufacturer's warranty, or is this a gray market item?

no it doesn't you can get a manufacturer's warranty from Macy's are they an AD? Maybe they are, I don't really see it that way though, there's just more than one route to get a mfr. warranty. Buy a Tissot or Hamilton or Seiko or Citizen etc etc etc at Macy's and it comes direct from the manufacturer with an mfr warranty and will NOT be stamped the warranty card will be blank just like it is when it is sent to the AD's. Drop is a clearinghouse and if they state there is a mfr warranty incorrectly they will at least cover it themselves over the same period of time, for a refund if they can't replace it, and as always, stamped warranty card or no stamped warranty card, what actually gets you your warranty exercised is going to be your purchase receipt. Re: Drop, you contact them first, they will then refer you from there. You do that through your transactions page. One Drop for a Vostok Europe I got needed warranty work, they literally just sent me to the mfr website, they covered it no questions asked and referred me to their contracted repair shop in the US (it was a small shop in Connecticut or something as I recall). Anyway, if you give a watch out as a gift for instance, make sure you include the original receipt, personally I always ask for a gift receipt in the event I may want to flip it, and including this receipt ensures that the party who purchases it can get the warranty exercised, no matter where it come from, you don't need that stamped card if you have your receipt, and I think I've gotten a total of 5 or 6 stamped dated fully filled out warranty card in like 250 watch purchases, at least 40 or 50 were from AD's. Most commonly it was stamped and not dated, which means what exactly? In order to prove when you purchased it, you still need your receipt.

It's too bad that the two reviews only mention the warranty card and have absolutely nothing about the watches. It's not that the warranty is unimportant, but it would seem that a review should actually speak to the product.

So we all like to rip on the various Ferrari branded watches, but Porsche Design actually does have some horological history and actual design (although you can certainly argue using the same design team as the 911, a car whose design hasn’t changed in 50+ years, is not wise.)
certainly not to my taste, but these do have a rep as solidly built pieces. If you own a boxster, why not.

Only “Porsche” watch I own. (Actually a Motochron). Gotta love the look of VDO gauges.

People this is Porsche Design! Not made by Porsche AG. Its a design house just as Gucci or Swatch AG
You do not have to buy a Porsche car to complete the watch.
The watch will do fine without.
As design goes, personally i like it.
So clean and simple. More of a tool watch. No unnecessary details to detract from reading the time.

I believe Porsche Design has always been a separate entity from the car brand and not some licensed sunglasses and watches gimmick. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but the watches used to be made by Eterna. Cool stuff.

DiecyclingPorsche Design is owned by Porsche SE since 2007, so the connection to the cars is there nowadays.
(Porsche SE is the majority owner of VW Group, which owns Porsche AG, the car company... confusing corporate structure, but that's how it is! ;-) )
Porsche Design is actually responsible for the design of many of the Porsche-branded accessories, including the Porsche-branded watches... They are even featured at the PD webshop, but as a separate product line "Porsche Design for Porsche"!
