treykingtreyking, is that because of the typical sound signature of a tube amp, or because of the output impedance? I'm not sure if this one is OTL, but that would make a difference. Just curious about your opinion and as to why you feel a tube amp don't pair well with the Fostex'.

j-techi have yet to buy a tube amp, but have been wanting one. problem is that i would be pairing it at work with my fostex th-x00 or denon d2000's, and i have repeatedly read that tube amps dont play well with 'darker' colored cans. impedance is definitely a concern considering the fostex are at 25 ohm, but from a signature standpoint i understand that the lower end could become muddled or a little too heavy. perhaps someone else out there could correct/support this statement? again, i dont own a tube amp, but i read a lot before buying because i am borderline OCD :)

treykingThanks. I'm looking at the same parameters as you. I've got the Fostex th-x00, and I've been considering going for a DIY tube amp, but am curious about whether it's worth it. I'll welcome any more thoughts on the subject by anyone with practical experience with the Fostex.

j-techi just picked up the grace m9xx (i really need to block this site...) and it has been said it was the perfect fit for those cans (the grace dac/amp could be seen in pics on Will's (from massdrop) desk beside the th-x00's when he was working with fostex on their sound signature, so i believe they were used in the tuning). however, with dual opamps, usb input to bypass internal DAC's, 1/4" AND 1/8" inputs, tube warmth, and DAC/AMP capabilities, i really dont know how you could go wrong with this one. seriously, $80?? i may buy one for my grado's or just to have.

j-techI have tried a couple tube amps on the Fostex TH-X00 and they never impress. Bass ends up slow and muffled. Even with a basic FiiO K1 the sound is vastly improved vs my Sonic Adventure Reality tube amp (which pairs great with my Sennheiser HD600s).
For me the TH-X00 really shine when paired with precise, flat, low impedance solid-state amps.

JamesXThe Massdrop O2/ODAC would probably be the best, cheapest option, whenever it drops again https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-odac It's perfect for the TH-X00 and I think only $200. Up the price and $312 for a JDS Labs version of that setup or $350 for the JDS Labs The Element. All cheaper than the GraceDesign and worthy competitors (or better depending on the reviewer).
For what it's worth, JDS Labs is having a B-stock sale https://www.jdslabs.com/store#b-stock right now for even more savings.
Until then you can do what I do (and love as my office setup). The E10k + Grado 1/8 to 1/4 adapter cable which solves for the 1/8 jack issue http://amzn.to/29eTuht I rarely if ever unplug the Grado cable and just use it's 1/4 plug. Works perfectly.
For what it's worth, JDS Labs is having a B-stock sale https://www.jdslabs.com/store#b-stock right now for even more savings.

The 12678 isn't nearly large enough for most full-sized headphones especially when you consider the protective padding. 12678 = 8 x 7 x 4 inches 10620 = 10 x 9 x 7 inches

It's awesome though! And the cheapest way to put together a seriously protective case similar to Audeze or MrSpeakers.

I've read about folks having driver-issues with USB on windows that were solved by using optical input. What I'm unsure of is if that happens on Linux/if it even works, and if optical out is reasonable on Linux, if, everything else is equal, I should prefer one or the other. If it matters, this machine runs Debian and the motherboard (Asus X99E-WS) has onboard SPDIF out.
