First of all, this knife is a toy. Think of it as half desk-art half fidget spinner. It's basically designed as a curiosity. But I like flipping knives while I think sometimes. And I don't like my co-workers in my office job in a liberal city thinking I'm a serial killer. Enter the hummingbird...
The hummingbird is adorable. It's smaller than you think. Even after watching videos, I had to hold it to really get the idea how small it was. But it has the same build quality as a regular high-end knife. The titanium is milled beautifully. The whole thing looks like a delicate wing. My girlfriend didn't even realize it was a knife until she'd pulled the blade out. She said without prompting that it looked like a hummingbird wing. Anyway, the anodizing is great. The milling is great. The general quality is very high. The detent is tuned perfectly for a great and easy flipping action. It springs open. It's on bushings, not bearings (plus the blade barely weighs anything) so it won't gravity close, but that doesn't really matter to me. The blade is beautiful. And what most impressed me was how the curves flow into eachother. When closed, the front of the blade matches perfectly with the frame, not sticking out at all. When open, it flows similarly well, with the hole in the blade resembling an eye. Milling on the blade is great.
some minor criticisms: First, it would be nice if the logo bit had a flat that indexed to the frame so that it was always aligned upright. It bugs me when it's turned at an angle, looks less clean. Second, they should locktite the pivot screw. Mine came loose after a few days of ceaseless flipping. Thankfully it's torx so it's easy to adjust and I fixed both of these issues myself. Lastly and most disappointingly, in contrast to the entire rest of the knife, the milling on the clip does not look very good. Instead of using a very small CNC ball mill to match the pattern on the rest of the knife (look at the little ridges in the close up), they used an end mill to just flatten the outside. This left machining marks that both don't look good in their own right and don't match with the rest of the knife's beautiful machining. The clip does have some accents in it which were machined by the CNC ball and they looked perfect. It would really tie the whole design together if the clip's outside had a light radius done with the same CNC ball.
4.5/5, would buy again. Wonderful desk toy. Mine came sharp enough. And it's more art than tool, so I'm not too concerned.
