I used Rite in the Rain products while I was in the Army. I can confirm that pencil is the best writing tool for the paper. Softer lead is better than harder, but too soft of lead and it smears badly. Erasers are iffy and tend to smear rather than erase. However, I did have better luck with the putty-style soft erasers and the hard, gummy erasers that leave crumbs everywhere.

sallenHey @Sallen, glad our stuff held up so well for you in the Army. Regarding lead hardness, I like to recommend #2B leads. The darker leads work great, especially on our tinted books (our green, tan, and black books have paper with a corresponding hue).
Indeed, erasers have various results on our stuff. Black erasers generally don't do well, pink ones work okay, and grey and white block erasers typically do very well. I like the erasers on our No. 99 Mechanical Pencil, the Uni Boxy Eraser, and the white Pentel block erasers.
