From what I've heard it's pretty bad

I like mine alot actually. It's not super high end but it gets the job done and is worlds better than onboard, but this is not at all a good price. Amazon has it for loads cheaper - $80 for the mic and $30 for the deadcat if you end up needing it.

brandongoransonwreuss8232: Is there any mic you'd recommend around this price point then?
I never used a mic so I'm curious what's good and bad about it.

lastzeroI would get this or their VideoMic Pro. If you can swing the extra cash and don't mind replacing batteries then it's a good upgrade.

brandongoransonReplacing batteries? You mean it runs on non-rechargeables versus this?

lastzeroYeah, it uses a 9 volt. You could always use rechargeable 9 volts but it's not like a lithium-ion with micro usb or anything

brandongoransonDo more expensive mics then require more/larger batteries?

lastzeroI mean eventually you get into mics needing phantom power and all that but as far as on-camera mics I think that's about as power hungry as they get.
