How do people clean the bags before storing it after a trip?

M_at_oTo clean the system you want to add a cap full of bleach to the dirty bag, let it sit for an hour and then let it run through the filter. Then do the same to the bottom bag. This will sanitize the filter for long term storage.

M_at_oOne can store bags and hoses, but definitely not filters, in the freezer. This is an easy way to keep mold or mildew from growing in them. (Water expands when it freezes, which could damage filters.)

Sawyer makes excellent light-weight filters. I've been using the original Sawyer Squeeze system in a custom gravity-feed configuration for years now. Here's a rundown of how to set up your Squeeze in a similar way:
For the grey water reservoir, you can just use an old Camelbak or other reservoir if you have one. Just make sure the hose fits the nipple on the Sawyer.
Cut off about 3 inches of tubing from the end, along with the bite valve, and attach the remaining tubing directly to the input of your Sawyer Squeeze. Then, attach the short length of tubing you cut off (along with the bite valve) to the output end. Hang the reservoir from a tree branch or somewhere it will be several feet above the filter, and you will have instant gravity fed water.
If you replace the bite valve with a small in-line on/off valve (which is how I use mine), you end up with a nice hands-free camp faucet for washing hands, dishes, filling water containers, etc... If not, you can simply drink directly from the bite valve or squeeze it with your fingers to use the water.
If you find the gravity flow rate too slow for your liking, simply buy some longer tubing to extend the distance (height) between the upper reservoir and the Sawyer. I find that hanging the reservoir on a branch about 5-6 feet up puts the filter at a nice height for camp chores and provides plenty of pressure.
It looks Sawyer has now done most of the work for us and put everything together in one neat package. Of course it costs a good bit more than just using the original Sawyer Squeeze with your own reservoir. One thing I don't see included is an on/off valve, which is nice to have.
I hope this info is helpful to someone out there! :-)

I "just" ordered the Sawyer mini after researching filtration back pack devices. I concluded after many reviews that the bags sawyer makes do not hold up and got different bags to go with my system. This system enthuses me although, and I just may spring for another! Did Sawyer address the bag issue?

Sixty7flhApparently the Sawyer bladder problem only affected earlier bladders, and I read somewhere the new bags don't suffer the same problem. I haven't had any problem with either the small one that comes with the mini, or the 2L ones yet.
I went through the same research process, my current water solution, based on Zpacks gearlists and some thought:
- Ultralight hiking (in areas with rivers/streams): Sawyer mini + one 2L Sawyer bladder + one supermarket-style 600ml bottled water bottle. Just add a 600ml water bottle for another person. Refill the bottles with filtered water at each stream, and for the overnight camping, refill each bottle with filtered water then fill the 2L bladder again to keep near the tent for cooking, cleaning etc. Very light - about 110g (3.9oz), and 20g (0.7oz) for the other person's bottle. Works great in areas with streams.
- Base camping for several people: Sawyer mini + 2 Platypus Hoser Hydration Reservoirs. The platypus hoses attach easily to the Sawyer mini and can be hung up on a branch for easy filtering 2L within about 5-10 minutes. I suppplied a camp of 7 people with clean, filtered water this way, over several days, it worked well. Make sure you bring the sawyer cleaning syringe if staying a few days and sourcing water from rivers, as the mini can silt up after several uses and needs flushing about once per day. I bought the Platys because I already had the Sawyer mini, I wanted to set up a drip system, and the Platys were in my local camping store. But I'm pretty happy with how it performs.
I don't use the Platys for hiking as they are a bit fiddly, they don't mate well to the Mini unless you use the hoses and make it a heavier system, and relying on only the bladders would result in carying water INSIDE your pack... I'm not convinced this is a good idea! So I carry the very light/strong standard supermarket water bottle in an outside pack pocket instead.
I found the Sawyer 2L bags are easier to filter water than the little bag that comes with the Mini, and more convenient for overnight storage. Sitting on the bag to do the filtering seems to work well, IF you are super careful not to puncture the bag!

does the dirty water bag have a fine screen to prevent larger particulate from getting into the filter?

wanderdonkeyI have the 4L version and it doesn't have a screen, but the hose is about an inch or so off the bottom of the bag so the heaviest particulates settle out before going down the tube to the filter.

murbanawizYou can easily use a bandana and cover the filling hole to filter any larger particulates from entering the bag. Simple solution if people are worried about getting it too dirty.

Hi, any idea about from where this item ships? Is it from within EU or from US? Just so that I can take potential import fees into account ...

I already have a Sawyer inline filter, but the designated dirty and clean bags are great, so I'll be glad to have this setup. It's all easily modular with the connectors.

I wanted to put my 2 cents in again on this filter system. I use it all the time with my backpack trips. Having the ability to have 4 liters of water at base camp is great for cooking and other uses. To answer a few questions which have been given before. @arielf, The filter is backwashable which allows you to keep it running great for a long time. Ive had mine for about 3 years now and it still works wonderfully. @wanderdonkey, It is wise to do this if it is easy enough just to keep the filter clean as possible. The system is pretty easy to backflush and I've gotten some pebbles and things out with no hassle. @Sixty7flh, My bags are still in good shape and this is even having tossed around on top of granite boulders.
There has been backpack trips in which there isn't water available for quite a while or the entire trip and being able to ready up the two bags plus my bladder leaves me with plenty of water for multi-day excursions. The speed of the filter is super nice as well and you don't have to fumble with pumps like other filtration systems. No moving parts = last longer. I do try to keep my pack at the lowest amount of weight but far from ultralight for multiple reasons yet this kit is only bulky and odd to pack which is really my only con for the kit.

Is this the same thing at Walmart for $79.99 and free shipping? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sawyer-Products-2-Liter-Complete-Water-Treatment-System/21811676
It's not in the photo, but the text says it comes with the faucet adapter and drink tube, too.

cricky101@cricky101 That looks like it is the same filter, though I'm not 100% sure because I couldn't find the model number on Wal-Mart's page. Maybe it's last years model? Either way, that's a great deal and certainly an option for those that want to shop at Wal-Mart.
In the meantime, we are working with our supplier to see if we can improve the value of this Drop for the community. Thanks!
