so i got in on this drop as my first introduction to the Sennheiser sound house, I'm wondering how these stack up against the 600 series headphones that i hear so much about and am wondering if im going to be left wanting instead of just going with a 600 series from the start?
the price here was really good....my goal is to get a decent set of headphones from most of the major soundhouses out there and decide who i personally like the best then go all in and invest in some of their top tier stuff....
would you say these headphones are an accurate representation of what i can expect from Sennheiser in general? i understand each model and even from set to set can have their own sound, but i am wondering if generally speaking this is a good place to start with Sennheiser or should i have just gone straight to the 600 series for that?

TheIzzardKingThese will meet the goal you set out in the second paragraph. The 600 series are definitely an upgrade from here, but you'd be jumping into the high(er) end right off the bat with them, with the cost/benefit analysis on that being up to you. At this price these are a steal if they are your first set of Senns, and a good representation of their house sound.

TheIzzardKingI'd have to say myself owning several pairs of Sennheiser cans that these will most definitely impress upon especially if you're just beginning to venture into the audiophile world. The HD 600's are a definite step up here but at the same time if you're just entering into this world I would highly recommend starting with these first to ensure that it's something that you're for sure going to want to pursue. Things to consider: HD 600 is decently more expensive than these and require a lot more power to drive them at 300ohms where as these are much easier to drive at only 50ohms. I would recommend though that you look into like a FiiO e10k with them just for the little added boost because though they are easily driven by something such as a cell phone, they do perform a little better in the detail and sound department with one of these. Also if you're looking for a more portable option the FiiO e17k is just as good.

Hopefully you find this helpful. Good luck in whatever you decide and welcome to the world of audiophiles! Once you're here there's no going back.

SoulShatter99Thank You sir. You are a god among men. Lol.
Seriously though, thanks, you killed it,that was super helpful.
Only thing was the amp suggestion, I picked up the e10k to power my k702s and it failed horribly, lol, I ordered both at the same time not knowing what I was doing, listened to it barely eek out some sound for like a week till I got fed up and plugged it into my laptop and holy cow did they perk up and come alive, lol... so now I'm in a place where I'm kinda scared to buy any amp on the cheaper side of the spectrum because if it's not better than my laptop then why bother.... apparently I have some Texas instruments burr brown amp inside and it looks like it can handle around 300 ohms... you got a suggestion of a good amp that'll outshine the laptop...it apparently has a couple dacs in it as well a saber 9018..i think and another chip I forget the number of...
Like I said, I need a decent stack as well, so I'm open to suggestions...i want to be able to grow into it and really only want to have to get something else because I'm being a snob or bored, not because it won't work with x,y,z ...
Again thank you so so much for your help, time and effort is valuable thanks for giving me some. Extremely greatful

TheIzzardKingAbsolutely, no problem and thank you very much for the compliment.
As far as your troubles with the FiiO e10k I can’t really help you with that one other than maybe the possibility that you had a faulty one. It’s supposed to be able to support 16 to 150 ohms as far as the drive so In theory it should’ve been more than enough to drive your K702’s at 62 ohms. I personally use mine plugged directly into my laptop (nothing special) and listen to my X2’s and HD 595’s and HD 598’s and it sounds phenomenal. As far as other options though I’ll have to look at my list I’ve got if I can find it here.
Now looking into for a decent stack, one which would also drive the HD 600 if in the future you do decided to go that route it would also drive would be the Magni, Modi combo which would work very well for any of the cans you have mentioned.
I also wanted to mention that when you go into a pair of Sennheiser’s coming from the AKG’s, come with and open mind. They have a different sound altogether, kind of more what some people say dark but have a pretty decent soundstage and are more upfront than many in the midrange. Sennheiser seems to like you to really hear them vocals but they are never overpowerin. That is one thing I have never found in my Sennheiser cans even at higher volumes is any level of sibilance. They’re are always enjoying for hours on end.
Hope this helps. I’ll try my best to help if you’ve got any more questions.

TheIzzardKingMost powerful amp (volume wise) on the cheap while still being high quality is the Fiio E09K or its replacement the K5. Don't buy the E09k on Amazon as its discontinued and Amazon pricing algorithm sees it as "rare" so it jacks up the price. It retailed for $110, don't pay a penny more than that for a new one. I bought mine from Zeos (z reviews) and he said its one of The most powerful single ended amps under $350. I believe him. They'll drive anything to painful volumes. K5 and E09k are both "docks" but it doesn't mean you have to use the dock. I've never used the one on my E09k, it's just a great clean, powerful headphone amp (as is its replacement the K5 which Zeos says is about the same but with refinements)

TheIzzardKingI think you're talking about wanting a DAC/amp stack as a separate thing, not tied to these headphones, so on that front let me endorse the Modi/Magni stack. You'll officially be a snob when it's not enough :). I would also second the comment that you must have gotten a faulty e10.
On the other hand, you don't need an amp to drive these 579s. They're like 50ohm, 105db sensitivity. Really easy to drive. Unless you have a lousy source, where you get more benefit from the DAC side of the equation (entry kindle fire is the only one I can personally attest to), you're better off spending that money on your exploration of different headphone sounds.
To each his own, of course, but every time I get the itch to start messing around with more DACs & amps, I read this post from NwAvGuy (the dude that designed the O2 Amp):
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/gain-and-headphone-ampsdacs.html
Keeps me focused on buying headphones with minimal differences instead ;)
