Can it decode Opus codec?
Hi, Do you know if this player is correct for a HD650 (not HD6XX) ? And would anyone have an opinion between this one and Fiio X3 III (power, reliability, ...) ? Thanks. Kogs
(Edited)
Kogs
While either, m3s has slight more power if using balanced, will drive the HD650/6XX niether is ideal.
Does anyone know if the M3s can act as a DAC for a PC like the M1 can?
CrazyScott
Yeah. Sure can.
Just FYI, I basically ok with this player, the only problem I have is the power button not working anymore. I bought from ali-express around $240.

the button used to has click feel when I press, but right now , if right now, it light up randomly when I press it. so i mainly use it as external dac for headphone
scottlu
i mean, I press it, it does not have the clicky feel any more, and may response to multiple press.
Does it works with tidal app?

Can't you use it as a bluetooth DAC with your smartphone somehow thought? I thought that was the work-around.
Heefty
It does work with OTG for Android as a DAC/amp. So reviews have said, have not tried it though.
Does anyone know where will they ship it from if I live in the EU?

massdrop does sell toe europe customers, depening on the item
i live in europe and have been able to purchase anything i want from massdrop so...
If you were seriously looking at this but don't want to wait almost a month to get it link below has it for $10 more. Free shipping and they do not use smart post which in my case takes 7 days to ship an item from MD to me and I only live 167 miles from the warehouse. https://shop.musicteck.com/products/shanling-m2s-ak4490eq-mini-bluetooth-dsd256-hifi-lossless-music-player?variant=43289573262&gclid=CjwKCAiA4OvhBRAjEiwAU2FoJSRU6g-G-zOMke25G3U4W3_dMLGJzq0HbvHqcUkO7pu85o-ucgt6dBoCBrIQAvD_BwE

are both front & back side covered in glass edge to edge? are there any documentation on how to open the case for eventual battery replacement?
(Edited)

Is it come with a case?@bfitz

Omn1potent_YouTh
no case, comes with 4(2 front. 2 back) screen protectors. @Planters yes, full glass front and back.

Thanks replying, I found a video for disassembling https://youtu.be/iA7poa30oZc (note; turn down your volume) Compared to an older xDuoo, M3s will take a lot more time https://youtu.be/3WbaZQ41Mg0?t=247
Two questions in case anyone knows a) Is this android? (I'm looking for non-android lean and efficient ones) b) Is there a comparison to the Xduuo x3 II Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I didn't know about the G7, either. Just knew about the V series. What makes the V30 better? Because if we're gonna A/B stuff, I agree on the sound quality and simplicity...
How do you feel g7 is better than v30 getting my brother to buy one for a phone and music player to Dave him some money because i just have him one of my quad ba iems for christmas. Does the g7 sound as good as v30 i know our has same audio hard ware right?
Getting back from the dead... Probably one of the shortest DAP career ever... interesting price anyway

I understood that part. Why didn't it stay long on the shelf? It sold fast or it has problems?
AudioJet
Not the most competitive retail price.. No problems, is a very capable, easy to use and no nonsense DAP.
Wait I just spent $400 on the new M5S dap and this has the same dual DACs.. The appearance even looks like the same DAP. i do like the M5s because it has a black background with no hiss on my very sensitive Campfire Audio Andromeda. What is the main difference between this M3s and the M5s?

Yeah, the M5s is the beefier model. Better battery, updated DACs, sleeker body 👍
M5s also has touchscreen functions. M3s screen, while pretty and with good resolution, is display only. BIG change.
I'm happy with my Shanling M2s, nice construction, good sound, decent power, volume wheel no problem; but I wouldn't buy this M3s just for the balanced output. Shanling better catch up with the field and offer a touchscreen display or they'll be left behind quick! I just bought a Fiio M9 which has better power, balanced output, Wifi, LDAC bluetooth, and supports apps such as Tidal. Cost of the Fiio was $299 but worth the total package upgrade. Come on Shanling! Even the Fiio M6 now has touchscreen for $149.

you are welcome to skip this message (IMHO you should consider skipping this drop) if ALL you will be using is 16/44.1k or lower, that typically include any lossy CODEC e.g. MP3 or audio recordings of FM/AM analogue radio, 8 bit gaming music from the 80s, you get the idea Unless LDAC had a breakthrough in the past 2-3 years, stay wired, don't bother with BT if you want true (not "near", not "almost") Lossless Hi-Res audio (true here means not just based on your hearing perception but the data being transmitted & received). At time of this writing, BT transmission for Hi-Res (24/96k and above, that includes DSD64 and above) is highly questionable due to its data rate and proprietary CODEC processing  (Sony's  LDAC is specd ~1Mbps, Qualcomm aptX-HD is lower, of course both have higher bandwidth than SBC)https://www.avhub.com.au/news/sound-image/what-is-sony-ldac-and-how-does-it-do-it-408285
https://www.soundguys.com/ldac-ultimate-bluetooth-guide-20026/ btw, both LDAC and aptX has licensing cost (except LDAC on Android, which Fiio M series is based on) so that leaves Wi-Fi connectivity (use case: lossy streaming services except TidalMasters) and the operating system (user experience) for ~$100 difference M6 at ~$150 is in a different class with integrated DAC and Amp and unsurprisingly various review shows that being inferior to M9 in the sound department (resolution, detail, imaging, … etc)

Might have mistaken your reply? Good article though. I am an aowner of this DAP.
What Bluetooth codecs it supports for both ways?
Nicodem
4.1 with Apt-x
Video review looks pretty good. Seems there are other reviewers that have problems with the scroll wheel breaking making it impossible to navigate. Shanling has no customer service. Great price but is it worth the risk? https://youtu.be/DsrOaHccybM

That's great to know. Thanks
AudioJet
you are welcome!
What about the wheel?
Been looking at M0 for a while. Is balanced the only difference? I’ll probably never need balanced.
pr0le
M3s has more/better circuitry (by far), and a longer battery life. M0 is more tolerant of large microSD storage with larger library. M0 has touchscreen, which is good and bad: easy to phatphinger a control (especially volume), and screen is very sensitive scrolling through menus or track listings. M3s controls are pretty intuitive after a little use. Both support BT 4. Only M3s supports balanced. I think the M3s has higher reach for lossless files (better bitrate etc) but both support hidef reasonably well. USB cable shipped with the M0 was definitely superior. Hopefully Shanling have updated the M3s accessory pack. If you'e buying a workout buddy or a commute cocoon, go for the M0. If not, and you're going seriously audiophile, get the M3s. (Full disclosure: I have both and am happy with each, and the M3s was the main audio source for my Tin T2 and Massdrop/NuForce IEM reviews.)

Thank you for the detailed answer. It’ll just be for commuting. Now off to find a good deal on the M0.
230 mW

balanced - nice catch! It still says 23mW, after all these minutes!
Dr_Rodney_McKay
At least its listed properly in the Spec section, still though, someone correct the description.
