There is no catch. I got the 20 degree bag on the last drop. It's awesome! Beats the pants off of any mummy bag I've ever been in. My quilt will still be my go to but this will be my below 35 degree bag. It's REALLY REALLY nice! The foot vent is a dream.
There is a bit of a catch. Unlrss you are buying the long version you will not be able to use this with a 25inch sleeping pad. I find the 20 inchers impossibly narrow, with my elbiws always on the ground and below the level of my body, which is quite uncomfortable. Fortunately I always buy long pads and bags, though at 6ft I am technically still within the range of regular.
Just a heads up to anyone buying from Canada. I got hit with $75 duty and tax when picking this up at the post office. Makes me think twice about future purchases from this site. It'd be nice if massdrop would offer a duty included shipping option for international buyers as a lot of sites do these days.
Why no woman's long version?? I see a trend in Drop. Mostly mens gear. And some ladies stuff (on the side). I'm 5'8" & I have to have a long sleeping bag. Most woman are short. C'mon Drop! your not for everyone apparently.. disappointed.
DarkWoodsWell i know it’s disappointing but C’mon we barely find something for men and 70% of most sites give all the attention to women ,no offense there . But you don’t need to be that much disappointed of the whole site because of that :)
treal512Per what I've come to understand; SD realized that the Backcountry Beds couldn't compete with other manufacturers in terms of weight to warmth, so they've come out with the Nitro (basic mummy design like the cloud, but with zipper. Probably better under freezing) and Cloud to accommodate this spectrum.
The Backcountry Beds will still be manufactured, now under the comfort over weight uses like car camping.
Hey this is a great bag but watch out if you're ordering it from outside the states- I live in Canada and got hit with $60 in customs fees. Still worth it but not really a "deal" at that point.
MonnoMI just ordered 2 of the Sierra Designs Nitro 20 bags (US$205, dropped today). Heheh, I sneakily made it 2 separate orders in the hopes that, individually, it won't be worth the customs staff's time to process them. Or at least one of them will slide under the radar.
I read somewhere that it costs the Canadian govt 4 times more to process duties than it collects from them. With the current online sales duty threshold at $20, the customs folks can only process a fraction of the >$20 mailed items. Plus it's Christmas time - nobody wants to hold up deliveries of Christmas presents!
GoGoGreenGiantWe've talked about trying to do a 0 in this bag but so far we haven't done it in any of our zipperless bags. It is something we're trying to figure out so hopefully it is still to come!
Upgrading from my current 30 degree, 3-season lower fp bag with this higher fp, lighter 35 degree model. It will be interesting to compare this to my EE quilt. While I do enjoy a quilt for weight, there is appeal to having the mummy shape this bag offers up top at night and I like the comforter concept. Probably would have bought the 20 degree model, but I'd recently filled that niche with a roomy spoon-shaped bag. I've moved from lighter bags that skimp on space/features to ones that support a good night's sleep.
ZionHikes1I did the same thing, moved to this from my 30 degree EE quilt. It was really nice still having the versatility of a quilt like top, but without the drafts or needing to lash down the quilt. For me, it was only an 80 gram difference between the two, so not even much of a weight penalty.
I received my 20F bag from the previous drop just recently.. maybe a couple of weeks ago.
Havent had the chance to put it to the test on a backpacking trip - but I have slept in it once so far to try it out.
It is really comfortable and light. I really like the comforter, and I usually dont like how restrictive normal sleeping bags feel. However, you definitely sacrifice a bit of versatility - in warmer weather, it wont be as practical as a bag with a side zip as you cannot uncover your self as much. You can uncover the top half of your body, but your legs (aside from your feet) will stay wrapped up pretty warmly. To be honest though - so far I'm content with the trade off (zip for quilt style comforter)
The other thing to note is the pad sleeve is quite narrow. I cannot come close to fitting my my large massdrop x klymit ultralight v in there. I might try modifying the bag to make it fit my pad - but I think sierra designs could have come up with a better solution to fit a wider range of pad sizes and shapes.
This one is probably a given for all ultralight sleeping bags - but it feels very delicate! No zips or buttons when you go in there, cause it feels like it would be quite easy to rip.
Quite happy with my purchase overall - especially for the price.
rcbellSave yourself the hassle and frustration by not planning to use this gear for that trip. The site admins have to make an agreement with manufacturers for the purchase date to get the special pricing, and so basically have a binding agreement.
