Interesting and great deal but with 5+ oz of down and 18+ oz weight, its definitely a heavy winter Jacket, eg sitting around camp. What kind of down is it? Is it ethically sourced?

J.cbIt is 800 fill duck down. It is all ethically sourced. SD sources all of its down through a company that is known for tracking its down.

J.cbI'm curious - I have never needed to own a winter jacket till now. (Always used base layers + a light jacket). When you say heavy - do you mean in terms of weight - i.e., there are comparable lighter weight jackets out there or do you mean in terms of protection from cold. (i.e. passive when not hiking, like sitting around camp.) I'm going to be moving to Boston :) from Texas so slightly clueless, but looking for an everyday jacket for when my hoodie won't cut it.

karthik3685I've lived in New England my whole life, Boston for the past 7 years. You are going to want something warmer than this when a Polar Vortex hits. Temps drop to single digits or lower with wind chills in the negative teens and when you're in the city between the tall buildings, the wind cuts through you like a knife. I'm not saying this isn't a good jacket (I don't own it so I have no opinion) but even if you layer like crazy, which you should, you're gonna want something a bit heavier (in terms of cold and wind). As far as layering goes, from bottom to top I've found sweat wicking, then thermal, insulator, and finally windbreak is the best way to do it when it's bitterly cold. Best of luck with the move, Boston is a great city!

karthik3685This jacket would be good in Boston for fall and spring but in the dead of winter, you will certainly want a warmer parka.
There are two main ways that a winter jacket like this get lighter.
The first is by the fill. This has 800 fill down, which is oz for oz warmer than most synthetic insulation fills. A higher fill power down has more loft and insulates better per unit of weight. The second is by shell fabric. This jacket has good shell fabrics that help it hit a middle price point and emphasize its durability. Other winter jackets can get lighter, by having nicer shell fabrics. They will often be more expensive but also lighter.
Hope that helps!

MikeGilbertI think what you should have replied is - that this jacket will never be delivered because of the incompetence of the people on the Massdrop platform!

charliezagreed - I did post elsewhere on this thread - massdrop had accidentally canceled my order on the day of shipping, prompting this angry comment. Someone contacted me after I reached out and set things straight.
