Again I'm tempted to buy a product but then find it's using the same lighting app as those accent lights. The permissions on the Play Store it requires on installation are VERY CONCERNING:
Version V2.4.0 can access: Location -approximate location (network-based) SMS -receive text messages (SMS) Phone -read phone status and identity -reroute outgoing calls Photos/Media/Files -read the contents of your USB storage -modify or delete the contents of your USB storage Storage -read the contents of your USB storage -modify or delete the contents of your USB storage Microphone -record audio Wi-Fi connection information -view Wi-Fi connections Device ID & call information -read phone status and identity Other -pair with Bluetooth devices -access Bluetooth settings

Developers have always been able to explicitly specify the permission groups (older versions) that they would like. Newer versions let them specify individual permissions at the time of use, but they still list the requested ones on install. If you go to the page and try to install it, you will get immediately prompted for the permissions I listed at the time of installation.
My concern is that some of those listed have nothing to do with the app's intended function, and quite honestly look like the application could be used to do some pretty concerning things.

winterblinkYes, I get that. The thing is that developers are still lazy and instead asking for specific permissions for each thing they just asked all of them at once. And I think they fixed that with the new app version as I downloaded it and it asked just for Bluetooth and location

Potential buyers should note that most of the issues reported so far are due to the control box (which enables the bluetooth app-controlled features). The lights themselves and power supply appear to be fine by most accounts.
If you do not need the app-controlled features, the LED strips themselves and power supplies are easily available online or direct from China at much lower cost (and available for different applications, such as waterproofed installation).
Also, anyone wiring these for a custom install should understand there is a functional limitation to how many lights can be powered by one power supply. These sort of lighting usually maxes out around two reels of continuous strip (you can solder reels together with simple speaker wire). One solution I found for this was to instead wire them directly to an old computer power supply. They already run at the correct voltage so there's no need for the transformer you see on the wall plug. Then you just run your connections from the individual rails. You can even wire the entire project to a single on/off switch at the PSU level if you like.
For anoyone curious, I used mine in a custom gaming table, where each player's seating used a different color (sort of like a game show, lol). I ran each strip to a specific seating, along the inside edge of the table (so the lights shine outward, onto the table's surface). Each seating has its own on/off control so I can deaden (on/off) a given player's lights by pressing a button. My setup lacks the bluetooth controller box though - it's all manual. The RGB effects use a wireless remote control for set-up.

Added some more photos of current state... I've got the actual table built now and the playing surface is installed. I still haven't completed the rails, which will house both the cup holders and the LED lighting. Plus there is some wiring that needs to happen so I can run power to the table. I'm planning to also install USB charging outlets at each player position, for phones and such.

AtriumXPThat's some good thinking and makes sense on a logistical level and wiring would be a hell of a lot easier than the crap that's on amazon but I'd be off on voltage aspect. What rail are you running these off of? Good post though it reminds me that I need to pick up a volt meter and a better solder right now.

The RGB strips are okay, nothing special about them. The controller itself seems to do the job well, however the software with which you control the device is pretty substandard. Pairing with the controller often take 3-4 attempts from my phone. I've not yet been successful at pairing with the controllers with my phone, perhaps one of the devices is defective.
The software itself lacks some basic controls, such as individual colour adjustment. You have a colour wheel you can manipulate, but you won't get only blue/red/green control with it unless you use one of the preset buttons. This means selecting the blue part of the colour wheel results in some red/green lighting as well.
The choice in patterns is pretty standard, nothing to really brag about.
I regret my purchase and wish I had known about the flaws.

p1coI agree with you that the app is pretty substandard. If possible, i'd rather just program my own. The color pallet selector is decent and can be fun to play around with but for choosing desired colors there are better interfaces. I'd like RGB sliders too to dial in colors.
And there are things that seem to have been overlooked. Like the option to set the brightness during the programmed patterns. If you want the breathe, or color changing modes they have to happen at full brightness, which isn't what I if i'm trying to fall asleep (to their credit the lights are bright). So instead of peaceful low level breathing lights I have to turn them off.

p1coSorry to hear this I was set to spend $60.00 on the 5m version did you get the cheaper version?
Just got mine today. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS. I prefer low light around my home, have a few darker areas that I have used mini-lights to illuminate without a lot of energy consumption. These fit that bill wonderfully, and I like the fact that they don't get warm. They use really little electricity, and the programmability/adjustability with my iPhone is CRAZY cool!
I had no problem with the app, and it allows one to control a virtually unlimited number of lights. I'm sold, I have already requested a repeat drop. I will definitely buy these again.
oh. and my smaller strip DID have a power adapter. Gotta be careful though with the plug with the 4 pins,(RGB and Grd), they are very delicate and can bend quite too easily, risk for snapping them off.

My experience as a Swedish buyer (European Union)
I purchased this LED strip to get a consumer view on purchasing from Massdrop US which I will be vlogging about. Similar LED lists with bluetooth capability is sold in physical stores in Sweden for about $55 - $65 depending on brand, and internet stores have approx the same prices + shipping (Shipping is approx $5 for single items, and often free shipping if purchasing several items at once or if you reach a certan amount)
So, this is how it turned out for me. A dissapointment in regards of cost and excessive waiting time. I am very happy that I decided NOT to purchase a GTX1080 through Massdrop but instead purchased in a local store.
- $27.99 for the led strip - $10.75 for shipping - $23 import cost / customs - This cost was added since the shipping documents from Massdrop did not state the US tax, only the total cost of the item. If US tax had been documented in the shipping documents, the import cost would have been approximately $4 instead. - I had a 12v 2A adapter handy at home, otherwise I would also need to invest in a $4 converter (US -> SE) or a separate 12v 2A adapter ($9)
Total cost for purchasing a Smart LED RGB bluetooth strip = $70,74 (with a separate 12v 2a adapter) or $65,74 (using a US -> SE converter)
The item is created in China by Shenzhen Singhong Technology. It seem to be a somewhat quality product. The Bluetooth functionality I suppose is embedded in the Lightning controller enclosed (CS2)
If Massdrop would make an apperance in Europe, it would be great, but until then, purchasing items via Massdrop may cost you more than it will cost in your local stores.

HoBBiSThanks Abulfurqan for your comment.
I am not aware of how taxes work in US, trying to understand that through Wikipedia now to get a better understanding. Thanks for informing me that no tax is added on this item.
The customs in Sweden mainly ensures that taxes are paid on imported goods (I am assuming the similar approach is for all EU countries)
The local shipping company will also add their charges to manage the customs review, when items are not clearly documented on the shipping documents.
The percentage/amount depends very much on the information on the shipping documents. In my case, the shipping document said "other" and no further information on the contents but the price for the item.
That results in a maximum customs rate and charges to compensate up to the highest possible rate, because the contents are not documented, it's like a "fine" being placed on the receiver of the goods.
If the shipping document would have stated "electronics", and even better "lights", and the material i'ts made of, the tax would be between 0-14% instead of the maximum rate incurred for non-described items. (0-14% is for electronics items, shoes have 17-18% and there are other percentages of other types of goods)
Basically the customs ensure that you pay the taxes for imported items.
I think Massdrop can heavily improve here by clearly stating the contents of the packages when shipping, to ensure proper handling outside US. The way it's done now will likely continue with negative feedback from EU consumers utilizing massdrop, such as myself, since in the end, the product would be cheaper to buy in local stores, due to the incorrect documentation, causing unnecessary high import rates/taxes.
Have a great day ahead!

BUYER BEWARE! I recently purchased this item and have discovered that the app does not support 7.0 on android. Doesn't come with a remote to control it either, one has to use the app. I got it to connect one time and after that it no longer connects. Essentially, now I just have a RGB strip that goes through a rainbow simulation.

hitekhippyGood post, email updates definitely would've been appreciated on this one.
Hello Everyone, I have updated the specifications section of the drop as well as added some images of the product and lifestyle shots. I believe I have addressed all the concerns as of now. This product is outdoor and waterproof safe. The SHLighting app has been update so that it works properly for both Android & IOS. I have used here in the office and it works as intended (which is why we have not dropped these products until now). The strip can produce a true white light. Yes, the product is 118 inches long (or 300cm) Finally it must be used with the SHLighting app as far as I know.
I hope this clears everything up but as always I am more than happy to help and answer any questions you may have. Thanks.
