I received my SMSL T1 the Friday before Christmas but, alas, it was defective. Noisy popping and crackling sounds. It wasn't the supplied tube doing this. I tried to sub a Valvo ECC88 but it too produced the same noisy results. I think either the power supply or output section was defective. Massdrop was wonderfully cooperative immediately sending me a shipping label to return the defective unit and began processing a replacement. The replacement arrived Wednesday, January 2nd and it works quite well with a portable CD player and sounds great! I'll try running my MacBook Air computer music files (FLAC and AAIF I think, gotta look) this weekend. So far, the T1 does a fine job of driving my Massdrop HiFiMAN HE4XX headphones. Plenty of reserve power despite the seemingly low output specs. I'll try my Massdrop HD6XX's this weekend, too. I'm very impressed how quickly and efficiently Massrop resolved my initial issue!

I am new to this tube goodness. How does one tell if a replacement tube is compatible? Is there a socket type or something that one can reference?
Lazytaco
For the SMSL T1, you must use a 6DJ8 equivalent such as 6922, E88CC, ECC88 or 7308. This info comes from Ludwell Sibley's wonderful reference book, "Tube Lore".

Thanks!
is the tube genelex e88cc can be use to replace with the 6N11? Thanks.
rjudge
Yes, you can.
rjudge
The E88CC and E88CC are European versions of the 6DJ8 and can certainly be used.
Gotta say, I bought this and the Massdrop CTH + SDAC.... And the SMSL is better. I didn't want to admit it to myself, but it is...

I have a large stock of some of the best Premium Euro tubes for this T1 amp. I will guarantee my tubes and I refuse to sell them on Ebay anymore after being scammed by an unethical buyer. I will show you test results for both triodes in each tube, balanced output. The BEST are not cheap. But you get what you pay for with me! My email is paul1453@gmail.com If you know what you want and how much you are willing to pay for the BEST tubes for this amp, email me. Most of my tubes are Amperex made in Holland. I have a few Mullards, and a couple of PQs and TeleFunkens too. I know what these rare Premium tubes are worth so please don't insult me with offers of Chinese tube prices. But I guarantee your satisfaction and will work with you to exchange tube you are not happy with!
How would this do up against a schiit stack v3? Running hifiman he4xx.

I have the Schiit Modi2 Uber and Magni3. SMSL T1 (with the Tesla 6N23P-EV tube, which I prefer over the stock or the Genalex Gold Lion E88CC tubes) is significantly warmer than the Schiit stack. T1 has enough power to drive both the 6XX and Aeons. I can barely go over 9 on the volume knob. The sound stage is a lot wider (tube effect) and the midrange is full bodied and smooth - probably down to the AKM 4490 chip.

For the uninitiated, how does this compare to the xDuoo TA-01B DAC/Amp?
Nasp
Just looking at the output power between this and the TA-01B, I'd take the TA-01B any day over this, but I admit I have not heard them. :( . The amp portion of this SMSL T1 seems astoundingly weak.
Just received mine after a 2 weeks delay! Still definitely worth the wait!
Check the discussion page for updates on your order. 10 days past estimated ship date. Where is the product?
i'm a bit disappointed because of delay, normally it would be like: "a) hi smsl, when would you send it? - b) xx.xx dear Massdrop a) ok many kisses" but i don't know, there's no communication, i'm waiting over a month and now it's like: we will inform you when there's added month of delay. Was very hyped about it but now i'm just bored of waiting.
can this play multiple inputs at the same time?
SleepyTheGeek
No.. One at a time
Got the last drop at $220 :(
NeoXNocturne
Still good deal. In Poland its 480$ right now :O This drop i think was quite unappreciated, with full A amplification, lamp buffered, preamp and high end dac in a price of just one of them.
Bellyofthebizd
And I missed it. Ah well :(
How would I connect this to my computer? All the lines out in the back are confusing, do I just plug in the Toslink and 24v in then plug my headphones into the 1/4mm in the front? I currently have a Magni 2 with a Male RCA cables going into the R and L connections which then terminates down to a 3.5mm male connector which I plug into the back of my soundcard on my computer. Would I need to use the same cable I have now for my Magnii 2 with the addition of using a toslink/usb? What would be better to use? Toslink or Usb? Thank you!
Jakecohen1
USB works great. That’s what I use.
The drop ends in 2 days. Will this product have another drop in the future?
Jonas.b
Yes. Right now :)

I bought on the last drop
hi, has anyone in Europe bought it? It's 110/220V on specs, but i want to make sure it will work fine
Bellyofthebizd
Oh well, joined the drop with hope for 220 volts :P
Bellyofthebizd
I joined as well and live in a 220 country. Actually if you look at the picture of the AC adaptor it reads 110-220V, so it should be worldwide voltage just like a laptop adaptor.
Can someone help me here ? Is this or the MassDrop O2+SDAC better ? I plan to pair it with a HE4XX and (possibly) a Messe 99

I'll think about it, but I already have some upgraded NOS tubes which, by the way, have no hum at all.
Eli35
Usually the best way to find a tube is to try it in your gear. They are all unique, even from the same manufacturer in the same lot #. Most tubes should not have any hum at all. Looking for DV or T1 replacements? DV replace the 6SN7 1st until you are happy, you could even try 6SL7s with more gain and less heater current without worry. The sound is always subjective! ;^)
Huge price drop this time...

Seems last stock of this item.
Obligatory request: will this drive my HD6xx well?
Load 1 more comment
One_Eyed_Jackal
A lot of people seem to have this question.
The answer would be "depends on your definition of well". It will drive the 6xx to enjoyable levels (70-100 db) without a problem. It will not drive the 6xx (rated at 97 db SPL at 1mW) to the threshold of pain i.e 120db before clipping (their specs say 42mW at 300 Ohms while keeping the THD+N <= 0.1%) but why would you ever want to listen to music at that level? Around 10-20mW of power is sufficient for *most* human beings to enjoy their music on the 6xx.
This is good enough for you but probably not good enough for your cat.
laksh
Awesome. Fortunately, my cat is adverse to towards loud noises. Thanks for the info @laksh .
Wanna sell mine for $180.

Yeah I'm in the states. You can find me on Headfi with ID: ZYReady. Or my email address is yangzhiyao-yzy@hotmail.com. Thank you!
Wonder if I can replace that wimpy-looking tube with something a little more "manly"?

Can someone do a review after they get it and make sure and plop a NOS Mullard or something as good as it.
rslatara
How about YOU doing that for US, instead?!
rslatara
Sounds excellent! Want to find out yourself? See my post offering High Quality replacement tubes at reasonable prices guaranteed! I got what you need, paul1453@gmail.com
I look forward to pair this with my HD600s Currently using Fiio Q1, so I'm hopping this will be a big upgrade :) Comments?
Would this be good for the Beyredynamic DT880 @ 600 ohm?
tropical-peach
It doesn't have a 600 ohm spec here, but at 300 ohms, it only produces 47mW, so I'd say no. Perhaps one of the Schiit or JDS Labs products would be suitable.
59 mW @32 Ohm? My xDuoo TA-10 is 2000 mw.

Ah! I still do not know the calculations but you are on to something!
rslatara
Oh--now it's turned into a pecker contest has it?
MD: you have got a very good review from a credible source and you are not giving it as much if not more marketing space(copy) as you do with some of the reviews you get from "Joe sh-- the Rag-man" individual user comment on some of your other products? https://www.headfonia.com/review-smsl-a-surprise/ Kudos to you for picking up what seems to be a fairly solid product. I like SMSL's products, considering the cost they hit. This looks promising.
coolerking
What is the actual power output surely that isn't the correct output listed?
rslatara
Any amp maker does better than this. I believe this must be an older SMSL product.
I have one, pretty nice little unit. Don't know what the stock tube is, but it sounds quite nice. Lots of I/O options. I especially like that there's a DAC out that bypasses the tube and a pre out that is buffered by the tube.
Unlike some other combo units, when you turn this off the DAC powers off. That was fine with Windows, but Volumio on my RPi didn't like that so much, and I'm not about to leave a tube on all the time.
I'll also note that while the power output noted in the specs seems awfully low, it can drive my HE400, 4XX and TH-X00 PH easily. I have not tried my T-X0 with it, but I don't foresee any issues there, nor do I have any high impedance cans to try with it.

No worries at all, thanks for doing that - still plenty of time to get or build a LPS before MD gets these shipped =]

So did your 25W linear power supply work?
This looks mighty fine. Been looking for a product to run my HD600 and my Swan m200s. Anyone know how well this pairs with the HD600 or how well it sounds with better tubes?
Does this ship in the UK?
Can I use the genalex gold lion - 12au7 or Ecc82 - with this? If yes, is it pretty straight forward to do so? Thanks and cheers
jer0n
A 12au7 to 6922 adapter should be sufficient. There is also a jumper in SMSL T1 to switch between 12V and 6V, but I am not sure whether this jumper can make it use 12au7 directly.
Too low of output power even if it is class a. Walwart power is a no go for me too !
