i want this headphone so badly. if it was a cool $1000 id instabuy.
I'd really like to know what the warranty is for this. On Amazon they have two listings for this headphone: a US domestic version and an international one. The domestic version has a limited 1 year warranty (you can see the warranty info on Sony's website). The international version has no official Sony warranty, however, the seller BuyWise provides some sort of 1 year warranty.
So, Massdrop people, which version are you selling us?
$1649.99 is an amazing deal for a domestic MDR-Z1R and by far the cheapest I have seen. However, it sounds to be good to true so I'm going have to assume that these are warranty-less international versions.

This has already been discuesed in comments below, but here is the link again.

Do yourselves a favour and look at the ZMF Eikon instead. That headphone nailed the tonality right and should be seriously considered over something like the Z1R or the Ether C Flow.

sadly not in terms of weight issues. Way to heavy to enjoy fully imo.
I got these headphones from eBay for about 1,700usd. All I can say is they sound fantasic...especially the vocal sounds so real. I use the upgrade balanced cable from Kimble cable and Sony pha-3 Dac/ amp , they work perfectly!

I'm gonna have to agree with the other guy; the Z1R is kinda screwed up. I tried one a little while back, and songs I'd known and loved for years just sounded distinctly... wrong. That spike in the treble completely at odds with the rest of the sound, the completely sucked out vocals, and the too-soft bass. At first listen it sounds OK, but get into it a little more and it starts to really fall apart. Switch to another pair of headphones and the flaws immediately become obvious. They're not terrible headphones; at $500-700 I can totally see myself getting a pair, even. But as a top of the line $2k set, they are severely disappointing.
There is some disagreement on whether or not there are some discrepancies in sound quality between different units of this headphone, perhaps different batches in production. They measured differently on head-fi than innerfidelity. Was some discussion on measurement rigs used. Personally I've heard them twice, really enjoyed them first time (though it was at a meet, a bit noisy), and found them to be pretty boomy and heavily encroaching on the mids the second time, which was at a smaller meet, less noise. Lots of variables there, but take it as you like.

how do you know in what way sony calibrates their equipment and that head-fi and innerfidelity do not?
Using frequency response curves from the same source is the only way to have somewhat reliable comparisons. There are so many factors that can affect a measurement rig. This is where innerfidelity shines as they have very large archive of measurements.
1) find a headphone you own, see how it measures there, 2)find the measurements for the headphone you want 3)compare graphs to see the relative level changes between the two 4)apply those increases/decreases to your own perception of the one you own
This helps eliminate the variances when comparing graphs from different sources/measurement methodologies.

You are a real nasty dog, Who gives a f@ck about Amazon? Why did you join massdrop? If you dont want to buy it just leave! You dog!
CountyMom1
Dog? Is he really a dog? Great typing skills!
Looks like they dropped the price below new on Amazon.
ZomNomNom
You get a 1 year warranty on Amazon combared to a 30 warrenty theough Massdrop. I think that is worth the extra $50.
Umm...these must have to sound good.
Have listened to these multiple times, realy like the build quality. However, definetly not worth this much, sound wise. Would consider buying these if price drop to 899. At this price range, PM headphones are better choices.

I think 899 would be reasonable price. The build quality is supreme. However the sound quality is not as good as Beyerdynamic T1. It is like a Mercedes S600 with a honda accord engine. I will pay 899 for the chasis.
PM headphones has its natural advantage, PM headphone can reach a higher limit than dynamic headphone. They are usually expensive because they usually sounds good.
I have these, and it's amazing. The bass is glorious!

wow so your saying these are nearly indistinguishable from the z7's that's pretty interesting
slappa
Similar sound signature to my ears, but the Z7 just doesn't do it as wide or as detailed.
Whether or not they are worth this kind of money is subjective, I briefly tried them and to me they are amazing. Great great headphones but for me (and only me) I do have the feeling that 500$ is the right Ballpark to get a hint of Hifi. Diminishing return is too high past that but again I have nothing against paying the big bucks for a more blissful experience for those who can. That being said, have to admit, either Massdrop dropped the ball or Buywise Corp. saw this and jumped on the opportunity. Don't know how that happened here but there is no way this drop will happen for anybody. We did see drops that where close to street price but I have to say it's quite rare that it will be above amazon prices. Even at Equal price often Amazon is limited to the US so still make sense for many. Sometime close to a point it's not so much of a deal, but 200$ more? Especially in a case where the warranty is better on Amazon from a seller that also ship internationally and faster. Not a critic on Massdrop, mistakes can happen, does happen, but I don't see them doing that knowingly. If so one has to wonder what's the point really? A little odd, it did stir up some discussion maybe they like that.
Not a good move especially there is a HE4xx drop currently active.

I've own a HE-500, which I would have sold would I have not been able to install the newer headband (HE-350 style) on it. If the HE-4xx has the same old headband design, which it seemingly does with some minor improvements (maybe), it would be disqualified purely on the merit of comfort and wearability. In my opinion. Were it not for the headband it would be pretty hard to beat value wise.
helpusdrzaius
HE500 is indeed a great value hp considering the used pair selling right now, its even better than LCD2
Agreed. Please don't assume that the price point on these is wrong, especially if you've never listened to the Z1R before. Because if you have, you know that these are worth the $2K plus price tag. Not just for the sound quality and reproduction that is totally ground breaking and like nothing you've heard before. But because they are built like a tank but yet the most comfortable headphone I've ever owned. I sold my HD800S, my LCD2, and my Mr. Speaker Ether+ once I owned the Z1R and realized it was the headphone killer for at least the next 2 years. It's that good. And I bought mine from Amazon for around $1900. So this is a steal assuming it comes with the full Sony warranty. I've been listening to my Z1R for about 5 months now and it sounds divine when paired with the Sony WM1A and/or the ZH1ES. After first owning the Z1R, I bought the rest of the signature gear because I know it will be the best audiophile solution for a long time. Sony, you are back on top of the audiophile game with this 70th anniversary piece of engineering innovation. And the look of these get me questions/comments everytime I listen to them in the coffee shops! They are beautiful and sound isolating to boot. :)

his opinion is bs. but he is old so either its different taste or hearing problem.

Excellent point on burn-in. Same experience with mine. But I was also burning in my WM1A DAP at the same time. Now I'm hearing musical separation and soundstage I've never heard in my music before. I'm now able to pick out the different drums and their location, and really hear all the movement and contact in the kick drum pedal. It's so real and alive on studio recordings! You could pay me to give up my Z1Rs now that they fully broken in and capable of unbelievable music reproduction of just about every genre.
😮😲😵😱😱😱😱😱
I have listened to these cans. Very nice, although I am not sure worth the price. I agree with $1000 being the right price point.

You're big on name calling. As you said, you are more than welcome to ignore me.
Alang07
No, 799 tops.
I'm beginning to see Massdrop as a place to get their exclusives, nothing more. (even then the HD6XX doesn't ship worldwide. What gives...?) These are cheaper elsewhere, as a matter of fact, I can walk into the Sony store and get it at exactly the same price...
I have these headphones. They're actually my favorite headphones. They are pretty laid back, and are easy to drive. I like them because of their build quality and comfort. They are not very heavy. Better with SS gear. Think of it like buying a Acura NSX, The Camaro ZL1 and GTR gives it a run for its money, but its an nsx. Lots of style points.
this vs ath m50x /s
so its $1699 for new on Amazon . Is there any reason this drop exists at all?

They are not new, they are "Amazon New."

Uzuzu
define Amazon new? Amazon new: noun. Brand new products at lower price delivered in days but denied by massdrop fans paying more to wait months as not new? So nowadays Amazon tolerate selling used products with explict description " brand new"?
Missdrop. For less money, the Ether C Flow, or even the Ether C, is a better deal.

pics w/ electrostat pads on, default pads are in the same, basically new shape. selling b/c these are just heavier than what I want and I don't like their clamp, and because I'm happy with headphones half the price to be honest.
also not sure if this conversation belongs here shoot me your email

Aw man, I was really hoping to see a great deal for these. The MDR-Z1R is currently my favorite closed headphone... It's just a fantastic listen, does everything right. It's really fun, as well. A high-end audiophile can that doesn't take itself too seriously... Who would have thunk it. I highly recommend the Z1R, but like others have said, $1699 on Amazon. With free 2-day shipping. It would have been amazing if MD had gotten, say, a $1399 drop on these. Of course, that would further devalue mine (like a sucker I paid $1999 when they dropped, because I just couldn't wait)... But then, one doesn't get into this hobby to invest, ha ha. So I'd be happy if more people got a deal on these... Come on MD! Let's make it happen!
In Amazon are $1699
Welp, this takes the cake for worst drop so far.
The 10dB middle finger at 2Khz sums up this headphone perfectly.

These are some of the photos I took from Hifi stores located in Korea. It's just my personal experience, but I don't think they sound that great if I compare to other headphones I've tried around that price value. The headphones itself isn't that heavy and feels very solid once you hold them. It's well constructed and the design is plain, clean, and modern. Overall, it's a solid product.

probably the case. US is generally one of the cheaper countries for consumers. Though some headphones are "imported" from Japan would obviously be cheaper in Japan, like certain sony headphones (ma900), fostex and stax.
KITTY
nice pics, thanks !!
FYI: If you buy from Amazon you have ZERO WARRANTY!

Well, damn! That's actually good deal!
Had a drop here means a newer version is coming?
Khragon
I've purchased headphones from BuyWise before. They're a legit good seller.
I don't understand why there's so much hate for this drop. It's a reasonable deal for a new set, though used/demo pairs are being sold for around $200 less. It might be outside most average consumers' budgets, but there are definitely enthusiasts out there able to pay.

Okay, now THAT is a deal.
Pankaic
Sony why? You're screwing retail buyers and sellers man
And shit's new too
