I want to like these, and I want to be able to buy them, but I just can't confidently go into this drop thinking that the quality assurance will be good. Too many issues.

tyler555I've had the HP100, 150, 200, P21, P30, and 3 IEMs - all perfect. The only QC issue I've ever been aware of was the earlier full-size headphones - if users would place the earpads together and squeeze (i.e. "pump" the earcups together), it could damage the drivers, so Soundmagic made changes to fix that. I think Soundmagic is one of the better companies for assuring quality.

I love open-back headphones and used the hp200s for months and was impressed. My only issue was they were quite "bright" on the high-end sometimes, but I have an EQ so I just compensate depending on what I'm listening to. They are nice build quality. Check out some reviews.

All 3 (100/150/200) are very different from each other. The 200 is open of course, and has a very strong treble, an upper bass emphasis that adds warmth, and a rolloff in the mid to low bass. The only issues I found with the 150 are a ~5 db recess around 200 hz and a ~6 db peak around 4 khz. Edit: I definitely prefer the HP150.

Unfortunately I don't have the 200 now, but reading my notes, the soundstage is OK but not that impressive. The biggest limitation I remember with the 200 is the upper treble was strong, but the lower treble a bit dark, and that takes away from soundstage. The 150, because of that 6 db or so recess around 150-200 hz, has an artificial boost in "soundstage" as a result. It's almost like an echo, but not as prominent. The original 100 had a broad and deep recess through the mids, but where that usually makes the vocals etc. distant-sounding, it didn't exactly do that. Anyway, the 100/150/200 all have pretty significant flaws to me, and I'd recommend a Philips or possibly the new AKG K7xx for a smoother less colored sound.
