I see alot of these on Md. Are there alot of certified locksmiths in this community forum. I certainly don't understand this as a hobby. I just hide a spare key outside of my houses. I don't think this should be a "hobby" that should be promoted. Untill now, I did not know that these items were available to just anyone. I'm sure there are people who buy these with the intent to see if"I can do this", just as I'm sure there are people with other intentions.
True. Hey, I understand, I like puzzles too. It's been nice chatting with you. You didn't get all defensive on me. Well, at least maybe we made some food for thought. Communication that creates insight and understanding is always a good thing. Still, if I were a merchant, I would not offer this product. Hopefully they will only go to the good guys like you, but I think thats probably too idealistic. Have a good time with your puzzle. I'm gonna go do the crossword and then pick on the guitar. Cheers!
ElsidI pick on the guitar AND pick on locks! They both bring great pleasure and yes, the overwhelming majority of us are not doing anything illegal with regards to possessing lock picks. Besides as Dkop1 stated, you can build these from numerous everyday materials anyway.
Jord1016The selection of picks in the pagoda set is oriented towards raking over single pin picking. That doesn't make this a bad set, but the 21 piece set has a more varied selection of picks.
The downside of the 21-piece set, as I see it, is the inclusion of items that are less useful than the others: the ball picks, the long hook, and the key extractor.
Also, 21-piece set includes some duplicates: 2 short hooks, 2 half diamonds, 2 snake rakes, etc. But duplicate picks aren't necessarily a bad thing, if you accidentally break/lose a pick.
Overall, I think the 21-piece set is more appropriate for a beginner.
If you're not in a hurry, you could wait for the southord 14-piece set to come back to massdrop. It costs less and most of the "missing" picks are just duplicates / more of the same.
gypsypipsI've watched his stuff and i thunk he's pretty cool but I didn't think he had any tutorials? aswell as that there is always the toool handbook, it has everything in it so that could be a good guide if you prefere reading with pictures to videos
Bogota lockpicks are second to none, which these are based off of. These are a bit sharper on the tips, and not as well polished as the real Bogota lockpicks, so they won't glide quite as smooth, but they should pick just about as well. They're also much, much cheaper.
These rakes will open any standard lock in an incredibly short, amount of time, and with incredible ease.
thewoodrowI used to polish them by hand using a 1000 grit wet sand, then finish with a 2000 grit wet sand. But recently I bought a Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener, which comes with a 6000 grit polishing belt. So, now I use the 1000 wet, then 2000 wet, and finish with a buff from the 6000 grit belt with a few drops of water. Gives a mirror finish, even on the picks I've made from wide truck wiper blade backing spring steel. If you're interested, Amazon usually sells the Work Sharp for between 65-70 USD. I paid 68 for mine, and I LOVE It. I use it now to sharpen all my knives and tools, which I have spent the last 20 years doing by hand with a whetstone. :)
No one else makes a set of "Bogota" style picks that is as complete as this set made by Southord. Also the Katana pick is quite effective as well. Good value here especially if we can get to the lower prices.
It is perhaps unfortunate that there have been so many lock pick drops recently as this is an impressive set that is getting lost in the other drops.
Shazb0tPersonally I don't think so, it gives to many rakes and will just teach you how to get in to why you get in, look at some sets by sparrow for other beginner sets but the choice is up to you. Also if you can see if there are any toool meetings near you, google them they're a cool group that has people who can teach you far better than any online guide. As well as being a better teacher I believe they sell a compleat set with everything you will need.
