I am a Retired Locksmith,
this is expensive...
It may convenient but it’s totally unnecessary.
I carry a pair of paper clips large and small and a pair of bobby pins large and small
in my wallet And I have for 25 years.
I use them often then throw them away .
that way you can fit the tension wrench to most any lock face.
plus the tips don’t look like spring steel.
i was tempted but the price is very high.
Southern Ord makes good products usually,
i am not saying this is a terrible tool set,
i am saying I wouldn’t buy it.
MikeRaskinI had to use paperclips when I dropped a keyboard into a locked box and I wish that I had had this available to me at the time because making a tension wrench with a paper clip is no easy task without pliers. I’m about to buy this just for the everyday unsuspicious convenience.
WyattPWhy don’t you just carry a small needle nose pliers so you can make any tool you need? There is a folding SwissTek model out there that fits on a keychain.
I have a crazy question or two. Why does massdrop sell so many lock picking kits?? Are there that many locksmiths around?? Is lock picking a hobby or game for a lot of people...like how a lot of people like to play golf??
Yeah, the extra tension wrenches don't fit in the unit, I couldn't actually get all the picks that shipped with it to fit in the unit, had to leave 3 or so out.
willparry79They will all fit, but you have to alternate some up and some down. I have found that there are several duplicates, of common picks- like the medium hook- and both ball picks and snowman picks. I don't need both, so I leave the snowman out, as well as all of the duplicates, which ends up being 5 picks total. Then they all fit and don't end up getting stuck in the barrel. As for tension wrenches, only one can be carried "in" the pen- as the pocket clip. Their are two long and two short tensioners, which is silly...various widths would have been better. I simply took one of my wider tension wrenches and filed four divots in it, so that it slid down into the groove on the pen- now I can carry a wide wrench. It took me all of 5 minutes. I wish Southord would do that, and send various widths, but it is a minor problem, easily corrected.
bnorgdI wish we could!
I looked into it and USPS won't ship lock picks over seas. Which is alright, but UPS is just crazy expensive and completely removes any of the savings you would get. Sorry about that, but hopefully something will change in the future.
AlexPkThat's because your Custom description listed the same product name, lockpicks.com and lockpickshop.com shipped overseas through USPS, their Customs descriptions will say "Tool Kit".
Use Massdrops awesome group buying power to get one for the price of three! Somewhat cynical inflation, given that they started off at $15. The more people complain, the more they put the price up.
I've been an active covert entry specialist in SWAT (Narcotics entry team) for 30 years. I developed a love for lock picking and have also been involved in Locksport for over 20 years. I own hundreds, if not thousands, of picks and gadgets and bypass tools that I have collected over the years, out of curiosity more than anything. I have come to prefer Sparrows, Southord, and Mad Bob's as my go-to manufacturers. But much like finding a comfortable off-duty holster, finding a truly useful EDC pick set that doesn't eat up pocket space or isn't uncomfortable to carry, is like finding a 4 leaf clover. I had settled on the twin titanium Bogota set from Mad Bob, which isn't bad, but it's very small and does not allow you an SPP option- which I much prefer to raking. The jack knife types (I own 5 different models) are decent but unwieldy, and never have very good feedback. When I was given my first Southord pen pick set (I own three now, after this last massdrop purchase) by my wife for my birthday 2 years ago, I was amazed- the quality, the materials, the feel, everything is truly first rate. An excellent EDC kit and backup. As close to perfect as you can get in a compact EDC kit!
Is it just me, or is there too much pick and not enough pen? The set arrived with a number of picks (as well as three of the included four tension wrenches) in the bag, not packed in the pen. Try as I might, I can't figure out a good way to get everything to fit. If you don't mind it looking a little silly, you can have 2 wrenches attached (one on either side), but I'm more worried about fitting all the picks. I'm probably going to have to pick two or three I can live without, but I'd really like to get them all in there such that I don't have to use a pair of pliers to get them out. If the pen were ever so slightly larger, all the picks would fit perfectly. That being said, it's a beautiful set, and at a great price.
wyagerThat video is pretty cool, and I agree that this isn't a set for novices or beginner pickers (I bought it as a backup/supplement to my zipcase full of spring steel picks that my dad gave me, which he got before SouthOrd was even a company), but it only shows how to get 14 picks back in (and even then, not without a fair amount of work). I've managed that much, but thanks to the wizards at Massdrop, we were gifted with two extra picks, and I can't for the life of me get all 16 to fit. 14 is still plenty (especially as a backup set), and I'll probably wind up going with the set that it comes with normally (they must've picked those 14 for a reason), but I was just wondering if anyone here had cracked the mystery of how to fit all 16 in. Extra internet points if you got all 4 tension wrenches stowed also ;). Come on, we've got the power of the largest network of human knowledge ever at our fingertips. We can figure this out.
EDIT:
I managed to get 15 in, using the first comment on that video. Take 10 picks, line them up so that the big sides are all together, drop them in pick side up, then put the remaining 5 picks in pick side down. If it starts to feel tight, you may need to reconfigure. #15 goes in pretty smoothly (if a little snugly), and makes it so the picks don't jangle around inside the case, but you've gotta tap the pen against your hand to get them out (be careful you don't do it too hard and drop picks everywhere).
