Product Description
Based on the idea that the best way to learn to pick a lock is by understanding the mechanisms behind it, the SouthOrd ST-23 is a comprehensive introduction to lockpicking, and a great way to start learning the tricks of the trade. this version has been updated with repinnable locks and a new-and-improved stand Read More
I tend to agree with others that not much effort or thought was put into listing this kit. The stand is a joke and I don't think you can find a poorer quality set of picks. Very disappointed and would return if that was an option.
I've had my good and bad purchases with MassDrop and I keep coming back. This was a poor purchase on my part.
STAFF: You must realize the customer depends on you. I used to believe if MassDrop listed a product then they had already done their due dilligence into the product. We as your customers trust this in you. SouthOrd ST-23 Locksmith Kit wasn't very well investigated. Suggestion, don't bring back the SouthOrd ST-23 Locksmith Kit , if you do I'll know you are just about money and don't really care for quality of the goods you sell. I do understand you have to decide between the quality and price to list your products at a reasonable selling price.
R000I had a similar reaction: I can easily build one of these on my own. And I have access to a bunch of old lock cylinders, being in the apartment management business.
But I bought one of these sets anyway, seeing as I have no time to build anything these days.
What the description doesn't make clear is that each of the included cylinders comes installed with the number of pins indicated by the number on the cylinder. So cylinder 1 has one pin, 2 has two, etc., up to 5.
I initially thought they were all 5 pin cylinders, just different ones.
Well, if you are learning from the ground level, this graduated approach does give you a better understanding of how your actions are affecting the pins and locking mechanism. This is especially apparent with the lower numbered pin cylinders. So there is a value to what you get in terms of learning.
If all of these had been 5 pin cylinders, you'd have less of a cause and effect understanding of what you just did, and more of a sense of just getting lucky.
So while you could build something like this yourself, it would take some time and effort to assemble a graduated set of cylinders like this yourself. Which is why I think this is a decent deal, if you consider the educational value of the set.
Having said that, I do agree that Massdrop is not the culprit in what one might consider a too high price for the material. It is Southord who set the retail price, so they should bear the burden of complaint if you feel the price is too high.
I just made a quick first impressions on this, I had very similar impressions on the ease of this kit as many others in this discussion but maybe a visual display of the kit can better inform some people. Check it out!~
I agree with most of the others. The stand is a joke. We're not talking about tight tolerances here... just a simple round hole that is deep enough to prevent the locks from rattling around. I simply don't understand how that got overlooked. Obviously it wasn't overlooked and they just didn't care which is worse.
Moving on to the locks - I have a teeny tiny bit of experience playing around with a cheap pick set and whatever old locks I would find lying around. With that, I was through all five of these in no time at all and what's even more ridiculous is that I got through locks 1, 2 and 3 with JUST the tension bar alone using it to rake the pins into place and spin the lock in just a few motions. Locks 4 and 5 took a whole five minutes each.
Now the pick set itself. Is someone actually trying to tell me that these are quality tools? Hey listen, I'm a sucker for quality tools. I'm the same dummy who pays $50-$60 each for Snap=On wrenches and whatnot, so yeah, I'm not afraid to spend on what I believe to be quality. These paper thin pieces of punched metal are not quality by any measure.
At the end of the day, I received a useless piece of wood, five crappy and useless locks and a pick set that isn't strong enough to pick my teeth much less any real lock. Thanks for nothing Massdrop. I have been using this site for quite some time and I've spent a fair amount of money here and all the while, I never voiced my feelings about how many of these drops save the buyer a couple of dollars at the expense of having to wait for often times MONTHS to receive the item. I haven't complained about the total lack of structure, in that the drop organizer never really has any information about their particular drop. I would expect the person running the drop to be at least an enthusiast if not an expert and thereby providing some guidance or personal opinion as to why they are pushing their drop as opposed to a competitor's product.
However, with this ridiculous excuse for a high-end product, I am most likely truly done with Massdrop for good, as they have made it perfectly clear that they have no interest in the quality of the products being sold, the amount of money being saved for the customer or the timeliness of the drop fulfillment. So if they don't care then I'm certainly not going to.
Just my personal opinion. Am I turning into a grumpy old cow in my old age or do any of you agree with me on this stuff? I really would like to hear.
No, he commented to you to point out that they're not just going to ship this to just anybody on the planet...
And BTW, anyone trying to break and enter isn't going to use a lockpick when they can simply DRILL YOUR LOCK just as silently...and, unless I'm "completely fucked in the head", cordless drills and bits are FAR easier to obtain...
Next you'll be crying about people buying sledgehammers and crowbars at the local Home Depot...
Pairs great with the expert lock set from scam stuff, for anyone who wants more of a challenge after they master this trainer. Not sure if anyone has linked to this yet, but I bought this as soon as the drop went live this last time.

Overpriced Junk. My 8 year old daughter blew through the entire set in under 5 minutes. The locks do not set in the storage holes securely as the photo leads one to believe. The picks are some of the worst quality available.
They are trainers for beginners. If you are already trained then don't buy them. That does not make them junk. It makes it a great set for people who have never picked a lock in their entire life and need to get the feel of how pins work.
Sparrows lock picks have some good ones, if you go to an antique store (they don't sell the cores too much in my experience) you can find a "core" (I just mean the base with nothing that moves out side of the lock) of a lock where you can pop the core and pin it how ever you like
