This is nearly an exact copy of the lambda top by darksucks. The difference appears to be that this one is made from stainless while the top that is being copied here is made from aluminum and brass, total brass, total copper, and some limited releases of tungsten and zirconium.
the total brass ones are still available from darksucks website (Prometheus lambda top) while there may still be some copper on bladehq. Copper is heavier than any of the other materials I listed other than tungsten, and more density means longer spin times. Also the ruby bearing is rounder than any other bearing meaning it will perform better (but is prone to crack when dropped on tile or granite so be careful in the kitchen and bathroom).
i recommend against supporting knockoffs, but that's up to you, and I am sad that Massdrop allows their site to be used for this.

Sure, these the two are very, very similar. However, there is one key difference in that this one is available while the Lambdas almost never are.

SugarRayOk I'll admit it's a (little) bit sexier for less... Now make it in copper or tungsten (heavier metals than brass) and I will consider getting one. Seriously.

These are way too expensive tops even after the discount. I've got several tops from Massdrop and foreverspin....but this one seem so expensive just for a stainless steel top.

As far as I am aware, Cody Mayfield (UDW) had been using bearings long before the Lambda original (brass ring, Al stem) was released on Kickstarter. UDW top #7 (see picture) is very close to the Lambda design to my eye, predating it by about 6-7 months. Much of the top community takes place in private groups on USN and Facebook, not public forums that search crawlers have access to get the info easily - what you perceive herein as "the original" (Lambda) may in fact be considered a copy of one of the most well respected top makers in the community. - gathering exact evidence would take time and effort, it's scattered amongst these private forums.
Tops that show up on Massdrop, Kickstarter and Indiegogo are (very generally speaking) a mass production design based on previous custom (unique) one-off designs created by the makers well before you see them on these sites. They are bringing a bit of the custom community to the masses at a lower price point, in exchange for a not-as-unique top where dozens or even hundreds may be made.

troyengelThere are three points to consider: 1) the innovation about the bearing ball claimed by the Lambda top is not the bearing ball idea itself but the use of ruby; 2) the innovation about the stem is making it hollow, which doesn't seem to be the case for UDW #7; 3) there are many differences in the shape of Lambda and UDW #7; they may be considered as details, but they are there.
That being said, I agree that there is a family resemblance, exactly as there is one between Spectre and Lambda. IMO, that doesn't make Lambda or Spectre less interesting. It's fortunate that every good idea is not copyrighted and that top makers can build on each others discoveries.

Thank you @Huskerinwa for putting the link to the original top design.
I'm going to buy the Lambada.
The crisscross cut-outs in Spun Out Designs "Spectre" top make me think that they could make it off-balance. Therefore, it would effect spin times and overall performance of the top.
HonestDickFeel free to check out my other tops I have for sale on my website. The feature less milling but the "budget top" is a performance top for sure with reported spin times over 15 min.

spunoutdesignsI checked out the tops on your website @spunoutdesigns. It's a nice simple website that gets right to the point. I would add an "about" page on there telling people about you or your company.

I bought the stainless with ceramic top and really like the design and spin times. If I could make a change for the better, I would make the stem a little smaller in diameter to allow for faster spins. I feel the stem is too large for the mass of the top and could be much better if made a little smaller. Overall, it is a great little EDC top and would recommend them to anyone interested in tops.

Looks like I got the same on at Target. Does yours have a silicon lip around the mirror that prevents the top from shooting off into LaLaLand when you got too much of a spin?

(this is a genuine, curious, and zero-sarcasm question) what is the fascination with spinning tops? I've never seen them for sale except when I joined massdrop and I see tops and tables for them. They're beautifully designed, but I assume it's gotta be more than that.

mikeysweetI posted my answer to a similar question in other top thread so I would repeat it here:
People also carry pocket tops to keep a grip on reality, at least I do. It's a crazy crazy world. This picture may helps

LOOK: This brass/ruby top is really beautiful and extremely well polished. It's not only about the carvings on the side or the high quality of the material. I recommend looking at the fine details with a magnifying glass in order to fully appreciate the high precision work. I could say it's my most beautiful one-piece top. On this point, it beats the famous Lambda.
DESIGN: Obviously, the design is inspired from the Lambda, but there are many differences (in addition to the carvings): in spite of having the same 1'' diameter and the same height, Sceptre looks thinner because the main disk has more material cut out from the upper and lower corners; both upper and lower sides of the disk central part are slightly hollowed; the bearing ball is smaller; the upper knurled part of the spindle is thicker; for some unknown reason, the spindle is not hollowed in its full length and the ruby is not visible from above. As a result of all these small differences, the look is significantly different from Lambda.
PERFORMANCE: I get only 7:55 minute spins, while I get 10:08 with Lambda brass/ruby (on the same cheap 3x mirror). This is due in part to the thicker spindle (it's beautiful but, as I feared, it's less efficient for providing high rpm at the start) and in part to a less good distribution of mass: less mass near the rim, more mass on the upper part of the spindle (the global -3g is unlikely to have any effect). Spinning is very stable, with wobbling in only the last 40 seconds. The carvings on the rim do not induce any flutter.
NOTICEABLE: When spinning, the carvings on the rim make it look softer.
SUMMARY: I'm very happy with this high quality top and I'll buy a copper or flamed stainless steel version if the drop is re-activated.
NOTE: I also have the "basic" flamed steel top from this shop (bought on Etsy). When spinning, its milled rim makes it look as if it had two separate disks. It has longer spin times and it's beautiful also. I highly recommend both tops.

Just thinking out loud. Not sure if I'd get the results of my imagination. But what if the spine was hollow all the way down, with ruby and embedded tritium vial? Maybe a longer vial so it could be seen both from the top of stem, and lighting up the ruby. The end result may not be worth the added cost. But I've seen some pretty big money spent on these crazy little things. My kids wonder if I've lost my mind with what I've spent on the few I have. 😇

BflyingThe 1'' brass Lambda top, which introduced the ideas of a hollow stem and a ruby tip, has a fully hollow spindle and you can see the ruby through it. It is an excellent spinner.
