This is a relatively hard to find Spyderco, and considered to be somewhat prestigious. The red CF is just ok, but this is one of the better steels Spyderco works with. Unlike a lot of Spydies this is a flipper, complete with flipper tab. CTS-XHP is a powdered metallurgy steel made by Carpenter, an American steel company. Generally speaking it takes an insane edge fairly easily, and will hold it a lot longer than the average steel. I prefer it to S30V and S35VN, and while it isn't quite as good as their M390 variant (CTS-204P) it's also not as pricy. I really wouldn't be surprised to see XHP all over the market in five more years. Would I take this knife over a PM2? Yeesh. That's a tough one. You're paying a lot more for this and the PM2 is an amazing knife. But the fact that I'm even considering it says a lot about the Domino.

c’mon Massdrop/ Drop / Drip whatever you’re calling yourselves this week, this is not a deal. And before all you fanboys start whining about big, bad Amazon, this knife is sold through Amazon by a Michigan camping/ outdoors business. Not to mention this knife is the same price at BladeHQ / Knife Center. I thought the drop (getting a group together to agree to purchase an item) was supposed to increase the purchasing power thereby lowering the price of said item . . . . now you’re just another online retailer?

I own a domino and its a pretty sweet knife. Fit and finish is excellent. The titanium framelock is a beautiful stonewash to hide scratches and the clip is PVD coated also holding up very well. The handle fits very comfortably in the hand with the jimped thumb ramp and finger choil. There is a steel lockbar insert. XHP steel is one of my favorites, and its a flipper riding on bearings. The blade shape is reminiscent of a manix 2 profile. Very well made overall. The knife was discontinued some time ago and maybe its only my example but the flipping action isnt like what you would expect on todays bearing flippers on the market. I just ordered a bearing upgrade from USAknifemaker (steel caged as opposed to the stock polymer caged) and hear it improves the action considerably to a shake shut. They cost under 7 dollars shipped and they will be here this week. If anyone is interested in an update ill post back with the results. Now do i like this folder enough to pay this drop price considering what else is available for that money these days? Its a fine knife but its a lot if money so Probably not so much but if you just got to have one like i did you can find a deal if you look long enough.

Blade hq ranks this steel in their ‘higher end steel’grouping, second only to M4,390 group.

There is a $6 difference between buying on Massdrop and BladeHQ or Knifeworks. What happened to all the savings we were supposed to get by joining Massdrop? I remember when there was a gauge at the top of the page that showed the price going down incrementally as more mebers joined the drop. Been a long time since I've seen that counter. Where's the discount for becoming a member?

Perhaps you were not around when they first started Massdrop and therefore you don't remember how things used to work. The idea was the more members that went in on the drop the better the price point. Seems they have moved away from that concept. My point, if you didn't understand it, was that the items are no longer offered that way and that I can find them elsewhere for the same or less money, so therefore, what is my incentive to buy from "The Drop", unless it is a unique item that is offered. I've reread my original post and I don't see anything about mentioning being cheated in it, and I would think in order to feel cheated you would have to purchase the item at the price that the "Drop" is offering. Which I will not since I can get it cheaper elsewhere. I am happy that you don't feel cheated, If there was a way I might feel cheated it would be in the fact that the site is no longer "Massdrop" and the original idea of the site has gone the way so many good ideas have gone. I, for one, would like to go back to the way the site originally started and was run.

I can still get Spyderco products for 10% off of their listed price from a site that I use. Reputable dealer.

Just bought blue cf,same steel at blade hq,I believe it was same price or dollar cheaper.love the knife spydie hole and flipper, little if any chamfering on the hole and top edges of knife.sharp enough to cut if rub finger hard on top edge.otherwise my absolute favorite spyderco and I have a fare number to compare this too.

Comparing to 440 is litterally the stupidest thing they could have done for this knife. 440 is what $5 Walmart knives use on their blade. I realize it's different and that's not what the comparison is trying to compare, but that's how it comes accross. "Why buy a $5 Walmart knife when you can buy this knife with comparable blade steel for $200?"

Yeah, like I said, I get that it wasn't the point of the comparison and that it was referring to the corrosion resistance. If they had used the full explanation you posted it would be different, but massdrop says, "similar to 440C but harder, giving it better edge retention." Imo that sounds like, "similar to 440 but a little better."

I just bught one a few weeks ago for close to the same price. I like the knife alot. My only issue is that the Spyder hole is very sharp. Something both my Taichung made knives have.

I have this exact same red carbon fiber pattern inlaid into a ring and a bracelet that I own so that makes this a very tempting knife, but the price seems rather ridiculous for an otherwise unimpressive knife and I have never really been a big fan of Spyderco blade designs. Decisions, decisions.

CracktowerI've always seen it described as a modified D2 that has the corrosion resistance of 440c. I added the spiel from their site which is a bit flaky. It's an awesome steel in real world use, I wouldn't let the comparisons put you off. The important thing not mentioned is the micro melt tech they use to produce the steel which gives it a distinct advantage over either steels.
"Air hardening, high carbon, high chromium, corrosion resistant alloy which can be described as either a high hardness Type 440C stainless steel or a corrosion resistant D2 tool steel. Possesses corrosion resistance equivalent to Type 440C stainless but can attain a maximum hardness of 64 HRC, approaching that of D2 tool steel."

CracktowerI followed the same train of thought as you for a while there man....had no idea why ppl would pay this kind of money for CTS-XHP and figured its popularity was just the result of a bunch of steel hypebeasts.... then i got an Arius and PM2 in XHP....and I'm grown enough to admit when I am dead wrong haha. I'm no pro sharpener, but some of the finest/scary sharp edges i've ever been able to EASILY put on a blade have been on my CTS-XHP and VG-10 knives....but XHP holds that edge wayyyy longer than VG-10 (obviously) and longer than S30v in my experience. LOVE the steel, one of my favs. I've had to eat crow on a few forums for bad-mouthing it in the past LOL.
