Great tool to get a practical feel for switches. Switch reviews are like reading perfume reviews, more of a poem. It's hard to get a sense of what 'tactile' and 'clicky' means to different people.
The product really should come with just a cheap printed map of which switch is which; referring back to the image here works but shouldn't be necessary.
Admittedly, the first thing I did was mash this tester against my face. And yes, it was satisfying.
I really appreciate the sheer number of switch options. You can really get a feel for the variance of similar switches (ie the milky vs the standard gaterons), plus you get to see a lot of switches you have never heard of before (ie the aliaz switches). Highly recommended.
They appear to be fully functional switches with the connections on the back. I don't have a hot swappable board to test it out with to get you a definite answer. It would be nice to test the actuation points... they could be hooked up to a simple LED that lights up the clear base-but this switch tester is expensive enough as it is. This is good for feeling the actuation weights, there's a lot of variation in this set. Some feel like they'd be tiring to type on, and some (clears) like there's barely any weight and i'd mistype on them - but I've no idea really. End of the day you'll still need to type with a full set of switches for a while to see how you like it, but this switch tester helps narrow things down and give you a view of the overall switch landscape.
I have one of these that I bought a couple of weeks ago from the KBDfans Aliexpress page. It's pretty great, tbh. I guess if you have any questions ask?
What I'd love is a switch tester that is also a working keyboard, and I'd gladly pay more for it. That would make it useful, once I've done testing, instead of sitting on a shelf.
one can get rubber feet at the hardware store. or you can glue some cork or plastic or anything on it, really, just to give some space underneath to run the wire. you can also just put the micrcontroller on the side if you don't wanna raise the switch tester up that much.
While using PCBs can seem like a reasonable or elegant way to wire up the switch tester, I noticed that there isn't space enough to fit any PCBs on there. I think just handwiring would be the most easy and elegant solution, and you wouldn't have to worry about putting all the switches on a new substrate and matching up a PCB to their spacing.
I'm somewhat mixed on the number of near-repeat switches. I get that changes in lighting matter, but I think there is an opportunity here to make a truly excellent product with the number of different switch types that could be gathered together, which is somewhat being missed. Where are the Mod switches? Outemou? Halo? Low profile? There is potential to really go all-out with non-MX switches as well. I realize that there might be business relationship reasons for the current switch complement, but I think the service this could provide is worth that effort.
Certainly, if some people want all the housing colors/LED switch versions, those could be options as well.
LuxiferI ordered one of these through AliExpress a week or two ago. I also ordered a bunch of switches that weren't on the tester, plus some acrylic bases and transparent keycaps.
When it all gets here, I'll have anything up to 80 switches in testers for direct comparison. I could even go crazy and put them all on my GMMK!
Some uncommon switches in this.
It's probably more like 30 different switches though, I personally don't count a housing color change as a unique switch. Each cherry and gateron has 1-3 that are the same excluding the color of the housing.
lol wat, where does the $55 MSRP come from? you can get this directly from KBDFans for $49... and it's in stock now so you probably won't have to wait until mid-September to get it.

Kinda considering getting their 72-switch one direct instead, since if I'm getting a ridiculous toy I might as well go big :P (plus, that one comes with helpful dye sub keycaps that identify each switch)
Can massdrop do a drop for a variety of obscure switches ? I’d be totally in to that... not just cherry and clones, but more varied set like Alps and Others..
Definitely have buyers remorse here. Doesn't secure switches well enough. Keys arrived all over the place, several with bent pins (not broken, but these are at risk of breaking). Do not buy, unless you're looking for a simple way to get a wide variety of keyswitches. I posted a 2 star review but my review didn't show up. :(
