Though I won't be buying this, I wonder how this compares to a Rode NT1-A. I am just now trying to learn more about microphones and am wondering what products are good for what.

MrPokeboy8Read as much as you can.., there are as many opinions as there are mics. My advice is when you don't have the bucks to buy the best, use what you've got. RODE makes excellent mics

AudioproThanks for the advice Audiopro. I was wondering about the NT1-A because there is someone in Craigslist selling one for $100; +/-$2 as this mic and the SM57/58 where I live. I want to know if it's a good value compared to others like the Shure SM57 or SM58.
After 10 minutes of searching forums, most say to get the SM57 first. I understand (maybe) that the NT1-A is better for voices, acoustic guitars, kick drums, and more.(?)

MrPokeboy8The NT1-A is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser mic, much more sensitive to sudden strong bursts of air and so care must be taken when using one on a kick drum. Notice I didn't say you couldn't.., just that you have to think differently when you do. Another valuable thing to study is the pick-up patterns of different mics, should you choose cardioid, omni, hyper-cardioid, or figure of eight? They all can be useful depending. Familiarity will help you use them better. You should always have an SM57, or 58 or two.., they will come in handy. I actually love the sound of an SM58 and have used them many times when recording classical groups (choruses) involving solo voices. This, while all the remaining mics would be small diaphragm condensers or large diaphragm placed at a greater distance. The advantage of SDCs is they exhibit smoother off-axis response no matter the pattern, while a LDC is more colored off-axis. Here again you need to understand what the particular mic does under use.

MrPokeboy8The NT1 Rode is a good mic, also be very careful about buying 2nd hand Shure SM57 and SM58 especially on Craigslist. There are fake ones out there that unsuspecting buyers purchased from eBay believing they got a hell of a deal to only later find out that they are not genuine.
