Is Tai-Hao getting some sort of kick-back from an antibiosis coating company? Is there some silent contingent of keyboard enthusiasts dying from infections from their keyboards? No, you didn't "hear" the community if you're still using it at all. Get rid of it, completely, then come back and try again.
ColHannibalThat's a really weak reason to then market it to mostly US / Western customers via Massdrop. I'm skeptical that this is a "must have" for asian internet cafes. But even if that's true, then why are they claiming to have "listened" to this community by making it a thinner coating? Why compromise the demands of a much larger / more lucrative market for the wishes of a smaller enthusiast community? It doesn't add up. I don't recall a single person here ever saying "You know, antibiosis coating is great, I just wish there was a bit less. Still there, just less." Said no one here, ever.
timmojoLarger market than Asia lol
Smaller enthusiast community than Asia HUGE lol
If there was any larger market in US or otherwise, there would more sellers and more keycap sets on the market. This is, in every way possible, a small niche market in any occidental country.
You do realize that they make keycaps for the US only because your country happen to use the same (or very close to) ansi layout ?
lossendaeWell, it's a big enough market that they have double shot molds - more than that, it's a community that they could sell to better if they'd skip a step in production - it's not like we're telling them to go get a new set of molds.
rampantandroidAsia use ANSI layout for their keyboard too, therefore there is no need for them to produce specific shots molds for your market.
As a matter of fact, we don't actually know if skipping that step in production would be that simple.
lossendaeThe legends will be specific however, since it's double shot. Every Chinese set I've seen, while ANSI, has a different legend set with extra characters on it (which makes sense since their alphabet is so very different.)
Separate question: how thick are these keycaps? Are they as thick as the Ducky thick PBT keycap sets are?
rampantandroidYou're right. I suppose that Tai Hao may as well be an US OEM which would explain why they have western charsets, but then again, i don't know.
lossendaeWait, what? Look - you said that their having an ANSI set was because the Chinese market used it. I pointed out that double shots require you to have dedicated legend molds, meaning they're making key sets not solely for China. I frankly don't care what they do for their Chinese key sets...however, when they're trying to get a bunch of sets sold on Massdrop, they would be doing themselves a service by skipping a step in production....or at least replying with something saying "It isn't so simple, we can't do that."
rampantandroidThat's why i say "you're right", literally. It was not sarcastic.
Being an OEM (provider) would mean that they have molds for US letters and cheaper mass produced keycaps. It's all supposition though, we don't know if skipping one step is doable. If the production is entirely automatized like many factories, it may not be as simple as it seems to be.
Hence "I don't know"
lossendaeAhh, OK - sorry, I read that as heavy sarcasm (glad you recognized that I misinterpreted!) It is a fair point though - we don't know how their manufacturing works, but I would suppose (and hope) that skipping a step would not be impossible.
rampantandroidDefinitely not impossible, as the Originative Carbon Black PBT set (that was also on Massdrop a while back) was made by Tai Hao and didn't come with antibiosis coating at all.
