Hi Karl the 70d has lower noise preamps and 4 channels. So this enables you to capture a surround mix in double m-s fur example, or two spot mics plus a stereo mix etc. It also allows you to record the same program on two sperate pairs at different levels in case one overloads. The firm factor is also superior.

I bought theTascam DR100 MKII two years ago for $299 (two channels only). Excellent sound quality. I record 2- hour live stage events and my camcorder and I are 65 feet away. I have no way to tweak the inputs during a performance so I just position the recorder at the front of the stage and ask the sound engineer to give me a peak signal for the specific performance during the sound test. If the recorder redlines at any point of the recording I am done. The sound signal ranges from whispering to 20-50 opera singers in full form. I also take a feed from a sound board to my Panasonic AG-AC160A - the theatres are notorious according to my experience for giving you a proper volume at sound test, then dropping it soon as the actual event starts. The sound board feed typically does not have a separate channel for two people whispering versus crowds. I also position a Rode VideoMic on the camcorder for my 2nd backup (seems silly at such a distance but it is better than nothing). Can't see how I could use the DR-70D but it sure looks fascinating. Any suggestions what I might be able to do with the DR-70D? Do you think it could stretch the sound coming from the sound boards so that the lows would be higher and the highs would be lower to save me from constantly having to adjust the sound level at the camera? Several people have said I need a compressor.
