so I know this is probably a stupid question but will I need an amp if I'm just plugging it into my pc via RCA, I will eventually get speakers as well but they sometimes come with built in amps as well I think, in short, will I need anything else to play records on this

joecrickFirst, there are no stupid questions. ;)
Second, this turntable has a preamplifier. That means it will take the sound from the needle and give it enough gain to be able to be heard through an audio device. If you're going to a PC audio-in from this turntable, you don't need anything else to listen to it with your headphones as you would from the PC today.
To go out to your speakers, you could run patch cables from your headphone-out or sound card's audio-out to either powered or unpowered speakers. If the speakers are unpowered, they would benefit from an amp. Unless, of course, they're low-cost desktop USB speakers.
