An ancient design dating back to Roman times, the friction folder has recently returned to popularity in the EDC community. The design is similar to a straight razor: To deploy the blade, push on the tang. By grasping the spine of the handle, you’ll manually secure the blade with no locking mechanism necessary. This one, designed by Leo Espinoza—and a first for TOPS Knives—features modern materials like a 1095 steel blade and a G-10 handle. The base of the blade has a large choil for finger placement, which offers a sure grip for detail work and more taxing jobs. The recurved shape of the blade helps pull material into it, and it makes for an effective slashing motion. With each knife comes a leather belt sheath for convenient carry, too.
