Product Description
Based in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, Ultimate Hammocks makes high-quality hammocks with simple, expert designs. Ideal for hiking, camping, boating, or just relaxing in your backyard, the Scout is constructed out of breathable, durable nylon with bartacked stress points, and finished with webbing ends instead of the basic cord on other hammocks Read More
I performed some research, and noticed that the Ultimate Hammocks Scout Hammock does not appear on their web page.
I'm not sure why, or maybe I missed it somehow, or maybe it is located on a secret hidden web page, but the Scout appears to be a special hammock that they make for Massdrop, Groupon, and others, or maybe it is just discontinued...not sure?
I did notice that there is still one in red being sold on Amazon by the Summit Hut for $18.99, but that does not include the straps, so nothing to write home about!
The Scout Hammock seems to be very close to being a drop for the Ultimate Hammocks Freedom Edition Hammock, which is currently being sold on their website for $54.95.
If you perform a little research, you will notice that the Ultimate Hammocks Freedom Hammock is manufactured to nearly the same dimensions as this hammock being offered in this drop.
Ultimate Hammocks Scout Hammock Dimensions: 112" x 57 " (285 x 145 cm), or 9' 4" Long x 4' 9" Wide.
Ultimate Hammocks Freedom Hammock 108" x 54" (274 x 137.16 cm), or 9" Long x 4" 6" Wide.
Neither one is what I would consider ideal for a hammock, as I always look for a hammock that is closer to 10" long, so a better hammock would be in the 9'10" to 10' 6" range.
Taller individuals will appreciate the extra 6" to 12" in length.
In addition to the length, the ideal hammock should be wider too, so one can get the best diagonal lay possible, or if using a pad like the Hammock V, a blanket, quilt, under-quilt, or mummy pod.
Again, in my opinion, and experience, a hammock that is 6' to 6" 6" wide is better, and more comfortable, so you won't feel pinched by the hammock.
You can also pull some of the hammock material over your head if you like, for a cocoon effect.
So, the hammock that you really want to purchase from Ultimate Hammocks is their Ultimate Hammock V2 with dimensions of 122' x 76", (309.88 x 193.04 cm), or 10’2” Long x 6’4” Wide, which they normally sell for $69.00, but currently sold out.
By the way, Ultimate Hammocks claims that the V2 Hammock is wide enough for two individuals, and yes, two individuals of average size could probably fit in the wider hammock, but I can't see that as being very comfortable.
One other important note...If you read the Massdrop Description you will find that the Tensile strength of the straps included with the Scout hammock is 800 lbs (363 kg).
Also, and very important to note is the Manufacturer's suggested weight capacity of only 220 lbs (100 kg).
So if you purchase this hammock and strap combo, you are getting a hammock rated to 400 pounds (181.436 kg), and straps that are rated to 800 pounds (362.873 kg) tensile strength, but with the suggested weight capacity of only 220 pounds (100 kg).
This is a bit confusing to say the least, and perhaps cautionary, and definitely limiting, again unless you are a smaller, lightweight individual.
I am 6' 3" and around 235 pounds of solid muscle, (OK, maybe 5 pounds of me is not technically muscle, LOL) and I previously purchased the Ultimate Hammocks 1600 pound (725.747 kg) tensile strength straps from Massdrop for $17.74 total, which are rated for a recommended use weight of 400 pounds (181.436 kg), by Ultimate Hammocks.
I have used them in conjunction with my 300 pound rated hammock without without any issues, and see no reason to purchase the 800 pound rated straps, when the 1600 pound straps are available for little or no extra cost.
Bottom Line...I'm passing on this drop for the following reasons:
1). The 220 pound weight limitations, and written maximum weight recommendations made by Ultimate Hammocks.
2). The sole option, or mandate of purchasing only the 800 pound rated tensile strength straps, versus the 1600 pound rated tensile strength straps.
3). The smallish and cramped dimensions as referenced above.
4). The color Forest Green is already sold out.
I could see using the other colors at the local beach, lake, or park, but not out in the forest, (or stealth camping), where I would mainly be located when using this hammock. Grey might be acceptable, but I see no reason to settle.
5). The shipping charges which adds 25% in additional cost to the hammock and straps!
Hopefully I pointed out and raised some issues that will help you to determine if this hammock and strap combination is good for you.
Very fair point to have one that can do it all. In my situation I have this one for lounging and as site furniture and a Hennessy with built in bug fly and a rain tarp for sleeping in. Due to the overall complexity of the setup of the Hennessy (not difficult, just takes some time) and the permanently attached bug net, I knew I'd want something simpler and easier to setup.
You also make another great point with the "for how long" question. Again, wouldn't recommend having two people in it for any length of time, but it is doable. I mainly said that for folks that aren't sure to hear from someone with personal experience with the hammock.
Ain't it great that we can have differing views and opinions, but still get along and share our experiences for everyones benefit? Now if only Congress could grasp that concept...
JNelsonTunksI'm 6'3" as well and about 220lbs. This thing fit me just fine. My girlfriend who is about 115 and 5'3" even climbed in with me, though I wouldn't really recommend using it with 2 people. Your question also depends on the intended use. If you plan on sleeping overnight in this thing, I'd say keep looking (check out Hennessy Hammocks and Warbonnet), but if you plan on stringing this up in the backyard or at a campsite as extra lounging/seating then you can't go wrong with this.
The Ultimate Hammock includes the straps and the total cost is for the same amount I paid for the straps, only. Even it the hammock didn't impress us much by reading the review it would be fair to at least test it.
(I bought the ones called Ultimate Hammocks Straps w/ Nano Weave equally rated 1,600 tensile. Potato, potatoe) :-)
ChussI think that you purchased the best straps.
I am not sure if I would purchase the Scout hammock however, especially just to test it out.
See my detailed review and opinion about this hammock in the discussion forum, to see why.
I'm looking for something like this for an upcoming trip, but I really need a mosquito net. Anyone know of a good solution; a net on the side or should I buy a hammock that comes with a net?
This is a great hammock for an unbeatable price! And the fact that the straps are included is a huge bonus. It would be nice to see the 1600 lbs. straps as an option, some additional accessories, and/or higher quality carabiners, but for a simple lounger hammock, you couldn't find better quality at a better price. I'm honestly considering getting another so I don't have to keep sharing with my girlfriend ;-).
I bought the hammock and 800lb straps. I love it for casual use not camping unless theres no moisture in the mornings or mosquitos at night.
I did try it with my Feathered Friends down quilt sleeping bag as an underquilt and it worked perfectly, I was a floating down burrito.
For the price it's a great buy.
I want one with a removable mosquito net, otherwise it's kinda pointless to me where I live with these fucking flying bloodsuckers everywhere. Either that, or MD should just sell a shitload of bats.
