Product Description
Offering a Model M feel, the Unicomp Ultra Classic Black is the first buckling-spring keyboard available through Massdrop. Manufactured by hand in Lexington, Kentucky, it’s a heavy, audible keyboard with a gorgeous finish reminiscent of the classic mechanical Model M from IBM Read More
BigendianThis was Unicomp's response about a tenkeyless (spacesaver) keyboard back in Dec. 2012:
"We have had many requests for a ten keyless, buckling spring keyboard. It is on our new product wish list and some effort has begun on it's development. It takes 8 to 12 months to bring a new product to market."...
I'll still buy it if they make it...
FreakyFred+1 on I'll still buy it.
8 to 12 months seem acceptable wait given SP keycaps are already there.
Seriously, if MD organizes a group buy a drop, it will make it I think.
I think you have a point there. Don't you hate it when you wake up in a bathtub full of ice, 2.4 lbs lighter and one kidney missing? Ugh - women.
Seriously though, I think the problem here is more like, "then you find out she likes to eat sardines for breakfast on cold winter mornings." as opposed to, "she steals one of your organs." There is nothing terribly wrong with it. Obviously it isn't aesthetically what everyone wants, but it has its own charm and it is truly quite functional. I think the biggest problem with these is what seems to be increasingly proven, that they have regular defects out of the factory. I have already seen about 4 complaints about this and I myself experienced it. I will say that I am particularly happy with mine, sardine breath and all.

Sorry, mates. You must be joking. How can you sell this one at $109 ($100 discounted) when you have in your store at Unicomp exactly the same keyboard at $94,99 (without any discount)? Please. Be serious. I want a buckling spring time ago. I love them. But I don't like people who think others are stupid. Maybe next time...
GromShipping to Australia from Unicomp is insane from memory but more reasonable from Massdrop.
Effectively makes it cheaper for us down here but not a smart choice in you're in the US.
FullObeansThat's if MassDrop actually allows time for us to wake up and place the order for one.
This past MD order session was so short, even I couldn't get to it in time before it was over. Maybe they are trying to leave us Aussie's out of anymore purchases.
Maybe this could be the Trump-effect, where only US citizens are allowed to buy from MassDrop. Pity if they caved into this madness : (
No wonder Ebay and KBDFans are getting most of my money these days, when it comes to keyboard's and caps ; )
romeviWhen they do finally release it and if MassDrop could grab some to sell here, I think it shall be sold in the thousands, guaranteed : )
Buckling Spring shall become popular yet again instead of only appealing to the few knutters who use them already.
yeah its not that much savings BUT like others have mentioned you get exclusive white/gray keycaps. I also can't speak for everyone but shipping cost is about 15 on Unicomp and I think 6 or 7 on Massdrop. Not HUGE savings but I this board is already one of the most modestly priced ones on the market on its own so I can't imagine them dropping too much in price. For me, the exclusivity of the keys and cheaper shipping costs was enough for me to finally pull the trigger on the Unicomp (which I have been going back and forth on for a while now). So in the end it was $99 vs $94 for a layout I won't be able to get anywhere on an item I already thought was a fair price and was considering buying. So if you wanted one anyways and you wanna save 5 bucks go for it!
comatoselosIn Canada shipping from Unicomp is $60, Massdrop ships it for $32. It's not the end of the world but the $28 savings are enough for me to justify buying a keyboard I don't really need. I could obviously ship it to some US PO box and go get it myself but that's another debate (I'm ~30 mins away from the borders).
So you're telling me this is a good deal by taking the $84 MSRP and then selling it for $99.99? Not sure where you got the $109.99 from considering Unicomps OWN WEBSITE has it listed for $84 right now.
PlanedropBut the 103-key option is an extra $10, then they do charge quite a bit for shipping, bring the total to slightly more than $100, which is the offer here on MD. I think if you want the traditional beige color scheme of the Model M, you might want to buy directly from Unicomp. This model on MD has the keycaps a pure white with gray mix.
JimDetroitI have the Unicomp 103 key (typing on it now) and JimDetroit is correct. My delivered price was $94 + $22 shipping (lowest cost option) for a total of $116 delivered. Was it worth it? YES, I love it. I'm sure it will outlive me :( ...
LeukybearI'm with you here, when or IF this ever gets offered for sale, have a feeling it will sell in the thousands worldwide.
Hoping this will happen soon especially here on MD ; )
I spent over a hundred dollars on a premium keyboard and ended up with a faulty, warped plastic.
I tried contacting Massdrop. Several times, 3 times already and they have yet to respond to me.
I don't know if they're ducking me or simply do not care in the least about customer, but I'm tired of trying to get a replacement for a wobbling keyboard.
Poor quality, suspect products. Steer clear of Massdrop.
Fang-iOS-EngineerAnd that's why you crossposted your whining everywhere? Because you thought that would probably help. I have news. You bought a mini 60 and gold-tone zinc keycaps. Your problem is not poor service, but rather, poor taste.
Fang-iOS-EngineerI think we can feel your pain as a customer with undeserving purchases and unreponsive service. But to cross-post into other unrelated posts and create a faux impression of poor product for another unrelated product is absolute desperation on your part; rather than empathy, you'll get caustic replies.
