The term “handwelting” is quickly fading from the shoemaker’s lexicon, with machines performing the work of the traditional cobbler in a fraction of the time, for pennies on the dollar. But there’s no replacing the human touch. Because handwelted shoes require a leather holdfast to secure the inseam—rather than the canvas that’s used in machine-made shoes—they offer superior comfort. And unlike machining, handwelting allows the outsoles to be replaced time and again without compromising the structural integrity of the shoes.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of suede color: Dark Brown or Mid Brown. You’ll also have your choice of last: F or P2. These boots are made-to-order and will ship approximately 8-10 weeks after the drop ends.
Among the world’s few shoemakers keeping this tradition alive is Vass. Helmed by Lazslo Vass, a 35-year veteran of the craft, this Budapest-based company employs a stable of 20 craftspeople whose handiwork goes into every pair. And these boots are no exception. Made to order, each pair is available in two different lasts, or shapes. A slightly wider last, P2 traces its roots back to 19th century Hungary, where handwelting has long been an artform. The F last, designed in collaboration with Italian shoemaker Roberto Ugolini, offers a more contemporary, streamlined shape. Constructed with a UK-made Dainite sole, which is designed for extra traction in wet weather, the boots are available in your choice of dark brown or mid brown suede.
These lasted shoe trees are specially designed to fit not only the P2 and F lasts but also your specific shoe size. In addition to preventing your boots from creasing, they’ll also help to maintain the original shape of the shoe.
Most people go true to size with the Vass F and P2 last. This means that a size 42 = US 9 = UK 8. Check the discussion thread for more information on sizing.
