Which model is this?

Hi - this amp has sold. Thanks for your interest.
How much was the base price for this drop?
please bring this back for like $800
Yup..interested on buying a black WA7d Fireflies..when it will be active again?
how much was the price of Woo Audio WA7d Fireflies ? and how long will i wait
will this drop be active again?
I received my WA7d (silver) last week, far earlier than the listing indicated. So far I am thrilled by the appearance and function of this unit with my Sennheiser HD600s. The improvement in sound and separation over my Aune T1 and Schiit Vali2 combo is palpable. I also have upgraded the tubes and think I notice an improvement (but this is one of those self-fulfilling subjective things). The only disappointment that I have is that, not reading the Massdrop ad and Woo site in enough detail, I didn’t realize that the WA7d was the older version of this DAC/Amp combination (caviat emptor and all that, but I wish this had been clearer). In any event I do much listening to TIDAL and FLAC though my iPad Pro what, if anything am I missing by having this unit in reference to the 2nd Gen?

Were you sent a tracking number, or did it just show up? Makes me worry about packages sitting on my doorstep.
tantram
Yes I received a tracking number when it was being sent. I was surprised that I got it that fast. The drop suggested they would be sent beginning on November 11.
MD's system should have closed the BLK color listing when it reached the cap, but it didn't and we apologize for this. The drop is the lowest price ever on WA7 and we don't know if it will happen again anytime soon. We hope those who are affected by the system error to consider the Silver color. We are confident you'll be pleased with our products.
Quite dissapointed about not being able to get the black version of the WA7d =( I've been waiting for to upgrade to this for a long time so I ultimiately swapped for the silver since I still want the amp.
Ordered a black WA7d. Received an email telling me to either (i) take a silver, or (ii) get a refund. Both options are not attractive to me.
The kicker about this issue is that I do not even know who to blame. Further, I do not know who to make suggestions for things to improve.
If MD had quantity limits, they really should have cut off orders from the get go. If this has been done for keycap sets, it should be done here as well.
If it's WA, they really should give people the option to upgrade to the new WA7 or wait for the units. Disappointing potential customers who were willing to part with their money like this is not good for business.
Thanks for stomping on my personal expectations with this drop, then tossing it out the window.

I got the same mail, I've been ordering from massdrop for a while now and this is the first time something like this happens. Still very disappointing, i will probably go for the color change though...
just got an email saying the drop that i ordered will be refunded because they ran out and can't fulfill all orders. that's a huge bummer...feel like all drops should be honored for the model ordered
Only a few hours remaining. $649 is the lowest price - ever. The price is $799 + shipping when the drop ends. Don't miss out!
Why does the power supply still have a knob?
TheOmegaCarrot
Believe it or not I think that is the World's largest power button.
ChromeCW
That is amazing
To clarify, $649 price is for Massdrop members only. Original MSRP is $999. Currently on sale for non Massdrop members at $799 on our website. It will remain at $799 when the drop ends. Buy-in on the drop and save $150.
Is this recommended as first Amp/DAC with the Beyerdynamics DT1990 and HD600? Or would you go for a a cheaper solid state amp?

No problem. Remember this is a fun hobby and to enjoy the music.
Stick with quality components. Buy the best you can afford. Take care of your gear and it will take care of you. As you upgrade, quality name components will be easier to sell at higher prices. Woo, Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic are all good examples of quality, name components.
Good luck

I own the WA7. I use it with Beyerdynamics T1 Teslas, DT 880's,(actually, the entire line 770's through T1's all 600 ohm cans), as well as my Sennheiser HD600's, and it does a very nice job. I use the DAC out to DAC my WA2 and my WA6. All very nice compliments to the Beyerdynamics and Sennheisers.
what the difference between the WA7 - WA7D? which one is better? what makes it better? can someone enlighten me please

TJG-MD wrote " The wa7d (the second version and the one in this drop) has both usb and optical inputs, but no analog input)"
And this is what I found to be not correct, because WA7D has RCA analog in, as well as WA7.
From my understanding WOO has 2 gens: 1 gen: WA7 and WA7D - the only difference is TOSLINK in on WA7D(yes, Duo digital ins). Both use same TI DACS and same AMPs.
2 gen: WA7 w ESS SABRE DAC instead of TI and improved AMP section(per Woo info) without TOSLINK.
Personally I've never heard 2nd gen WA7 amp section and cant say if it performs better that 1st gen amp. But for ESS DAC I can say its pretty bright analytical DAC, and I personally prefer TI or any other like BurrBrown chips. I found them to be more musical.
escknx
I believe TJG-MD meant that the WA7d has no RCA outs. He stated as much elsewhere, but in writing the passage you quoted, he might have inadvertently reversed the terms in and out. Most of us have done that kind of thing, esp. when trying to establish the same point multiple times.
This is verified by Woo Audio's product page for the WA7d:
"Multi-functional switch for Optical input, USB input, and RCA input." Note that nothing is said about RCA outputs, which is the feature that I personally would need if I were purchasing.
Contrast that description with the one on the product page for the newest model:
"The RCA connectors can be used either as RCA analog inputs or USB DAC preamp outputs."
How does this compare to the m9xx? Is it worth it at it's price point? While I enjoy the m9xx for it's clarity and good balance, I do prefer something fast that attempts to bring out some warmth from the HE-560s.

It's worth noting that planars are resistive loads and their FR isn't affected by high output impedances the same way that dynamic headphones are. Planars also generally want a fair amount of current. Vacuum tubes are better at putting out voltage than current, so amps using tubes for the output stage aren't the best at driving planars. That's not to say they can't, but it's definitely not their strong suit. Solid state amps like the m9xx can do everything well without coloring the sound. However, sighted listening comparisons between the two are going to depend on a lot of other things besides the audio signal, so who can say whether whatever difference your brain thinks it hears will be worth it to you?
got a Denon PMA-1600NE for about the same price as this with the tube power supply. I know this is a tube head amp+DAC, but still the price seems steep. The Denon is made in Japan Shirakawa
I have a pair of Fostex TH-x00 Purplehearts with an 02+ODAC. I've been thinking about this drop. Any guidance on whether moving to the Fireflies is a significant jump in quality? Also, I've never had a tube amp -- only SS. Would I be better of with the Grace next time it is dropped here? What is the lifespan of the Firefly stock tubes?

Thanks. Sad, since I was getting all psyched to drop some $$$ on this cool drop! Is this the consensus? From what I've read on Head-Fi, it seems like people love the combo. However, its all so subjective that its hard to rely on any opinion. I only wish that there was a return policy. On the other hand, I also have a pair of HD650's, but with my current O2+ODAC setup, I prefer the Purplehearts easily over them . . . Can others weigh in on the THX00 with the Fireflies?
motoman
Your HD650 will sound better with this amp. That's not only because it has 300 ohm impedance, but because as a dynamic driver, its impedance is partially inductive in nature and fluctuates with FR, shooting up to 500-600 ohm around the mid-bass region. A tube amp with its characteristically high output impedance will augment (more voltage) and better control the HD650's bass response, which is what people mean when they say "tubey", which is a specific quantifiable effect.
The audio hobby is full of expensive pitfalls and traps. The vast majority of the consumer base is uninformed and underinformed, and this willful ignorance is magnified in the echo chambers of forums discussions and such, in which people just repeat what they've read elsewhere as gospel. On the back of this ignorance, the audio enthusiast industry has gotten away with murder, i.e. the entire audiophile cabling industry for instance.
It's hilarious that Woo Audio would advertise this amp as appropriate for headphones down to 8 ohms, which suggests it'd be appropriate for some of the most sensitive IEMs, i.e. Andromeda, while for SOME reason not listing this amp's output impedance, which is arguably one of the most important pieces of information for amp/can pairing. Fortunately, we have a few enthusiasts who measure all this stuff.
If I seriously consider spending 1300 on a pre-amp, I would step up to use the front end of a MC275.

How would you connect, isn’t the MC275 a power amp?
flyfisher55
Get output from pre-level - the 4 post at the front.
it would have been nice if massdrop had the option to buy the 2nd gen one here as well.
i didnt know it was the 1st gen until i saw the comments and checked the specs.
nony
2nd gen has much brighter DAC and lacking optical in but as an option would be fair..
Any place to buy EH gold plated tubes except Woo store?
The issue for me is that each version of the WA7 has exclusive features that I need in one model.
The first iteration is OOP and isn't on the Woo Audio product page. The second has optical and USB but no RCA out and a DAC with lesser resolution (32-Bit, 192kHz). The third version has a 384k Sabre DAC and RCA outs but no optical in. If the second iteration had optical and USB, I'd seriously consider waiting for a sale. If this iteration had RCA outs as well as ins, I'd be tempted by the $150 discount here.
Neither of the two currently available models works for my current setup. Here's hoping the fourth iteration brings back more digital ins. A remote would be nice, too.
Varholiaglimp
IIRC on this model the RCA jacks function as outputs unless the input selector switch is set to RCA which turns them into inputs. Unless what your are asking for are 2 sets of RCA jacks one each for input/output.
The RCA out feature is removed on the this (duo) model. The selector switch allows for the selection of either of the two digital inputs or the RCA input. The same switch in the other model (which is now the 2nd gen) is used for either USB or RCI input and RCA output.
It isn't really fair to say the MSRP of this drop is deceptive. As WooAudio said, the MSRP shown on Massdrop is technically correct. If there's a sale on a manufacturer's site, the MSRP is still the same because you're looking at the discounted price. Massdrop is not going to adjust the MSRP to match sales on other sites -- not even the manufacturer's site. What's confusing is that the Woo Audio site lists $799 as the standard price on the products page. You have to select the first-gen WA7d product page and scroll down to read the following: LIMITED TIME SPECIAL (was $999): $799* / $1399**
Varholiaglimp
$649 price on MD is a members only deal. The $799 on our website is the sale price for non Massdrop members.
WooAudio
I'm very aware of the additionally discounted price on Massdrop, WooAudio. I'm addressing the specific confusion among several newer members about the sale price listed on the WooAudio site, which those members have been confusing with the original MSRP.
To others, I've already mentioned that the drop on MD offers an additional $149 discount. You and I have agreed on that consistently.
This drop looks to me like WooAudio is trying to get rid of the old inventory through Massdrop. The add is deceptive as it states wrong originail price. I would expect Massdrop to protect their members against this.
Nlalk
Correct! An audio store named Addicted to Audio in Australia drop this one to $899 from rrp $1899. Rip-off rrp is normal practice here in the down-under
Black Friday of 2016, the fireflies 2nd gen had a discount price of $849.99. I think it is a much better deal than this one. But don't get me wrong, this price is the lowest price of fireflies 1st gen that I have ever seen. Just, since 2nd gen has been out for so long now, I think we should pay more attention to it.
God I wish I needed this. I already have a $400 headphone amp, but it's so pretty...

Mods void the warranty but i bet it's way better. Add an LED light since we got no tubes.
This is a very compelling reason to spend six hundred fifty dollars.
This is the 1st Gen version... it's a lukewarm deal, but std price on the WooAudio website is $799. It's a very good product, but not a great deal.
