Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. Pretty much all I'm asking is if I need to buy anything else besides the products listed above?
Specifically, If I get this kit, ditch the frame and put the PCB in my own case, what experience will I have, how snug are these hot swappable sockets? I would think they may have a little play in them.
I personally would drop the extra 15 and get this https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/stainless-steel-plate-for-xd75re-60-custom-keyboard-Mechanical-Keyboard-Plate-support-xd75re/3034003_32821198488.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.5bdadf474fAws1
BUT The question becomes if that plate supports as many cases as the PCB does.
I will be building an XD75 as my first ortho in a couple paychecks and I am using this case https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/stainless-steel-bent-case-for-xd75re-60-custom-keyboard-enclosed-case-upper-and-lower-case/3034003_32819638145.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.5bdadf47LWFZMo
