Its too expensive!
I'd join this drop but I can't until 4/1. I guess I'll wait until the next one.

Looks like I’ll be in with you. I’m the only one signed up now. Doubt it’s going to hit 3 in the next 24 hrs
Only need two more to make this drop happen. Great balanced DAC. Dive in.
The silence on the last drop tells me everyone is liking what they hear. You usually only hear from folks having problems. Satisfied customers usually stay quiet. Busy enjoying their music.

Well, I can answer both.
There is no factory warranty through the vendor but Massdrop stands behinds it for a year. MD doesn’t keep inventory so if there is a problem contact support, return the unit and you get a full refund. Yulong does have a direct phone number and email on their website under the support tab. As for the drivers, my gf told me she had no issues with the driver. She has a PC. I had a couple weeks with the DA9 and really liked it. It pairs really well with everything I tried. Fostex TH900, LCD2rev2, THX00 and the HD6XX, Noble6, Shure846, Noble K10, NuForce HEM8. Also hooked it up Balanced to the LCX and it was incredible.
The DA9 is built like a tank. Certainly up to the quality I would expect in a +$1000 unit. Take a look at the Yulong website. It made me feel better. I wasnt sure about the filters and modes but after using them I do like the option. The Sharp and PCM1 is the truest setting for those wondering. Classical and more quiet blues/singer songwriter stuff does benefit from playing with the filters. Never overly warm but never harsh either. Sweet and buttery. Extremely revealing. Silent background and isolation of instruments are both on point.Soundstage is incredible too. I enjoyed the time with Yulong DA9. Certainly not an expert but do enjoy good gear for a good price. I’ve been looking into this DAC/Amp for a while. Connectablity is great too. Im already in On this drop. Fingers crossed it has enough interest. Take the plunge. You won’t be sorry you did. And if you are, return it and get your money back.
Can't see spending nearly a grand on a box based on someone's comments or review. Second, if were are trying to get to the "pure/real" sound, why does this thing have a six-speed transmission (multiple sound modes)? If any of them are "right" the others must be wrong? And if any of those issues weren't concern enough--it's ugly!
Hi, I'm in Australia and we have heavy tax/charges for items bought over $1000 AUD. Is it possible for the price to be marked on the post form as something like $700USD? Other wise it would make the much wanted buy undoable. Thanks for your time.

You seem very irritated, and seem to fixated with mom lol.
I also think the 6 filters is just for individuals preferences, and the filter loatdog mentioned is just the most neutral and perhaps natural. This isnt a bad thing people like op p swapping amd tube rolling to shift sound signatures depending on specific headphones. Yulong makes great desktop dacs their DA 8 was really impressive hifi sound quality. But i agree it is a lot of money when you cannot try one out, and when there are offering like jotunheim for 500 and even things like Audio gd.

Evidently you have a low threshold for Irritation and Mother fixations--two subjects you are perhaps more familiar with than I-- or if not, just easily influenced? Either way, we're all glad to see you've woken from you eleven-month, posting slumber just in time to join your Australian countrymen, and share some more of that witty, down-under, repartee with the rest of us M-droppers--now we can all be friends!

For the price, you could get a Topping DX7S and a Jotunheim, which would also give you quite a bit of extra flexibility.
The_Jniac
I went for the Jot!
Just wanted to chime in again since I got it going. This thing is really nice. Sounds amazing. Very musical. The depth of tone is incredible. Really enjoying it. Beware that there is a voltage switch on the back of the unit. Mine came set at V240. Slide the button down gently and you will see V115. It must be switched to use. Easy but not explained well or at all in the manual. Impresses by the sound. Looking forward to get some more hours burn in. It already is sounding sweet. Great buy! Would highly recommend to anyon in the market .
Lostdog54
Does it indeed have crappy drivers? I mean when you buy a $1k device you expect everything to be at least satisfactory. I would be worried about future support.
Romchuque
I haven’t needed any of the drivers to be honest. It works great. I do have a Mac. But my gf has tried it several times on her PC laptop and no issues. I dont think she needed the drivers but would have to confirm that with her. It was the voltage switch on the back of the unit that needed to be changed. Just slides up and down. Easy. Once I found that voltage switch it has worked flawlessly. I have been super impressed with this unit and pairedwith the LCX it is pure gold. Either way I know it has worked with no hassles on both PC and Mac without drivers or a simple download on the PC laptop. I know she downloaded one of the drivers but I’m not sure it was necessary.
Any advice on getting it up and running? I have hooked it up to my MacBook Pro through usb and no sound. The Dac is showing up. Tried playing music from iTunes library as well as tidal. Tried both the balanced and 6.3mm headphone outputs and nothing. Really strange. I thought it was plug and play unless using windows. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

No but I found the voltage switch on the back. That was my issue. It’s working well now that the voltage switch is switched.
Lostdog54
That would do it.
@Massdrop Any update on shipping date. March 1st has come and gone. No shipping info. An update on shipping would be great. Thanks
I bought one of these in the last drop, and really love it. It drives nearly anything I plug into it splendidly, though I have yet to try IEMs. The balanced output on this unit is also definitely superior to the SE one.
The drivers are cantankerous, but it works great once configured. It also is an excellent standalone DAC or preamp with excellent volume control. I use it with a vintage Naim stereo setup, and am extremely pleased each time I turn it on.

Still better than my dumbest moment: I cleaned my PC, then spent almost an hour trying to figure out why it would not turn on. I forgot to turn the PSU back on.
The_Jniac
Had a similar situation once--didn't realize the plug my printer was using was controlled by a wall switch. Couldn't figure out why it only worked intermittently!

Looks better than the front side!
Once again, no pics of the rear.

I've heard spdif is a good way to avoid usb driver issues.
tumaru
True, but SDPIF also has a lower maximum sample rate. I think 96kHz? Not a problem for 99.9% of people though.
LOL! $1k. Um...no.

Oh—most unkind!
I wonder how this compares to the Audio-dg NDB-28.38 with the Sabre ES9038Pro . One thing the Audio-dg has going for it is that it accepts balanced and single-ended inputs so you can use it to amplify other sources. And MOAR POWER! Almost 3x. Just look at that R-core transformer and power caps.

blahhh
I own the AudioGD 28.38. Its a good unit, and will drive anything, I cant do a direct comparison with this unit as I don't own it. I have been very happy with my AGD unit. It just takes a while to arrive to the US, and you can use it with powered monitors / external amp.
Why no pictures of the back of the unit?
Would this be too much for the senn 6xx compared to just using jot ? Or will it be worth it ?
ThatWei
It seems to be a common opinion that 6xx loves tubes, like the bottlehead + crack and very few SS amps pair comparably well with it (Jotunheim, Eddie Current, for eg). Buy this only if you think you've done enough research about its synergy with 6xx, or with any headphone you're planning on using for that matter.
hello guys. here is my review of the yulong da9. hope this helps.
Wow! It sure does cost a lot for balanced. I didn't read the desciption, but maybe its made in Japan?

Read first, write later.
You don't need it--drink your tea!
As a casual listener and hobbyist, I come no where close to even considering myself an audiophile.
That said, why does everything I read about DSD trigger an amazing deja vu about this:

And yes, I am old enough to remember friends smugly showing them off.

Can I get those disks on Reel to Reel?!
Rochambeaux
LaserDisc is to Blu-ray, as CD is to SACD. DSD became a gift to audiophiles when the patent ran out,, and we found out how to retrieve the data;) listen to something recorded in the studio in DSD, in DSD. LaserDisc was so attractive, that IBM even put their finger into it briefly, and then pulled it out.

Not a fan of fully discrete amp topologies.
Arguments down there that "this is DSD so it's worth the buck" made me write it. PCM of proper parameters can and will contain everything that you can hear. It's not some magical new format sony throws at you that makes a difference. It's the way it's been recorded and then mastered. So please stop jerking off to some old farts at sony that forced some younger folks to come up with something new to patent, after CD patent expired, and just spend some time to actually learn a bit about audio.

Also, my $80 Topping DAC also decodes DSD. It's not like the "big new super-expensive feature" every audiophile should invest into.
Here there is some initial impressions - sounds promising:

Let's say you have 600 ohm headphones. For $999.99, you'd be getting a 110/230mW amp... that's MILLIwatt, folks.
Although nice, I do not believe this is worth the asking price when there are alternative products that tick all the same boxes that this does at a fraction of this cost. I would highly recommend anyone looking at this product take a look at the Schiit Jotunheim and compare for yourself. I am not an industry 'shill', nor am I a Schiit 'fanboy'. I have many DAC/Amp combos by many manufactures such as Marantz, Fiio, Oppo, Audioengine, Nobsound, and many other obscure names. I actually own and use the Schiit Jotunheim for my daily listening in my home office, and I find the value incredibly hard to beat for the performance it offers.

Only unbalanced mode cross talk seems to be on the low side, balanced numbers are more than impressive, check it out.
Lol
Massdrop: Please add a photo of the back of the DA9 to the product page. I wouldn't think of purchasing a DAC/amp without seeing the arrangement and inclusiveness of the I/O on the back. The posts linking to photos below are helpful, but anyone who clicks on the product page of this drop should be seeing those views.
One thing that bothers me: the apparent lack of an analog in. Sometimes a listener might want the option of using the DA9 with an analog source.

Yes, I saw those two posts and revised mine immediately after, but thanks anyway, and I'm glad we agree that the image should appear on the product page.
I'm interested to see whether anyone else cares about the absence of an analog in (according to the specs accompanying the second image).
Varholiaglimp
Sorry, for 1k we just can't get you a pic of the rear of unit.
Holy moly, I want this just by its specs alone....... mfw

Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure that's how half the stuff on MD is sold!
its on AK4497 chip, its really musical. Its the best on the market by far, better than sabre chips. I know that as i have gustard a20h on two of these chips.

Is it warmer? The sabre that I have and have heard, all seem very detailed and "trebally" (not a word).
Cooler
What is the output impedance of the headphone ports on the A20H? That highly critical piece of information seems to be absent in all of the Internet.
how is this worth $1000?

I'm curious how this fair up against the Schiit Jotunheim. It uses AK4497 as oppose to AK4490, but the Jotunheim has the flexibility to be just a preamp. Not only you can connect to your pc, but also to other stereo equipment.
SpiderPiggy
DigiKey lists the 1 unit DAC costs as $52.53 vs. $5.08. I suppose that explains the huge drop cost on the DA9.
who handles the warranty in the US?
